Lily Cole’s appearance on the Gaultier men’s runway was a little bit awesome and a little bit odd: what’s a top female supermodel doing on a guy’s runway? Sure, some men have crept onto women’s catwalks before – Burberry and Chanel’s Spring shows spring to mind – but watching Lily’s slounchy slink was different and somehow unsettling.
Style critic Tim Blanks says this:
“[Gaultier has] always understood that ambiguity can be an asset, in the same way that assumptions are a liability. Look at what hairdresser George got away with simply because the husbands of his lovers assumed he must be gay.”
Meanwhile, I remember this one time when a boy and I swapped jeans because we both wore the same size; then our tees, then our sweaters, then our scarves. Running out the door to dinner, it was the first time we felt like we belonged to each other, and at the time, that felt sexier – and less anxious – than wearing a dress.
