Disposable Fashion: Waste Not, Wear Not

disposable dress.jpg

London scientists just created a disposable dress that’s made from dissolvable polymer. While the dress melts down in water, its fibers are strong enough “that they can survive a sweaty party,” but probably not rain - or tears, should your boyfriend break up with you for wearing a plastic bag out to dinner.

The London Telegraph calls the dress “a symbol of our throwaway society, not to mention the stuff of male fantasies.” Meanwhile, Fashionista wonders if it’ll be sold in the ultimate place for disposable fashion, Forever 21.

This is hardly a new concept. Paper dresses made a minor splash in 1968. They sold them floor length so you could cut them to whatever length worked for you. Most people (my mother included) cut them into minis. Once every decade, someone tries to reintroduce these in the latest chemically enhanced fabric. Mercifully, the fad never lasts too long.

this and yesterday's news of the impending availability of designer man-leggings leaves me worried for the future impropriety of the two concepts meshed.

Well, at least it's biodegradable. I bet it takes centuries for a Forever 21 dress to disappear.
