DIY: Louis Vuitton Spring Necklace

behati1.jpg(We can’t exactly recreate an LV runway accessory, so let’s just say we’ve been inspired…)

You’ll need: 1 yard of rhinestone trim. 3 yards of thin ribbon, 2 yards of a ribbon of thicker width. 2½ yards of pom-pom trim. This should all cost $30 at a craft store.

Step one: Cut the thin ribbon in half. You’ll end up with two pieces that are 1½ yards each. Then braid together the two pieces of ribbon with the rhinestone chain, making sure to tie a knot off at one end.

Step two: Rip the wider ribbon down the middle - if it frays, even better. Then take those two pieces of ribbon, grab the pom-pom trim and the braided ribbon from step one, and double-knot together the ends to form the enclosure (you want a big knot so that there’s lots of ribbon at the end).

Step three: Let the pieces tangle together. Twist them and knot them wherever you feel appropriate. Then put the whole thing around your neck.

Step four: Act blasé when Mischa Barton sends her assistant to ask how you already got the necklace of the season. Be cryptic and tell her it only took thirty bucks to get off the wait-list.

This reminds me of when my mom bought ribbons, fabric store pearls, plastic buttons, and silk flowers to make cheap version of a woven belt she loved in a store, circa 1985. I think both of us still wish and fear that the style would come back. . .
