Does The Gap Have a Secret Designer Stash?

phoebe.jpg

Last November, WWD reported that Phoebe Philo was quietly sketching new clothes for The Gap (intrigue!). Now an anonymous source at Gap tells us that Phoebe’s undercover clothes are rolling into stores this season (excitement!).

The only problem? Phoebe isn’t a proper guest designer, so her outfits remain anonymous on the shelves (outrage!).

To quell this fashion injustice, we’ve culled our best guesses - based on Phoebe’s personal style and also on her runway years at Chloe - and come up with a short list of her possible outfits (obsession!).

From left to right, Gap’s new shirt dress, tunic, and tank dress, all available at Gap.com

And Chloe’s comparable outfits, from Phoebe’s last collections for the house, available to see at Style.com.

Interesting parallel...but I can't see Ms. Philo so entrenched with a company that has seen such corporate turmoil for months on end--but is this naive of me?

They need to close most of the Gap stores and replace them with a new concept store. People want new shit. And that means from the store name to the concept to the decor to everything. The Gap has some decent stuff, but people, especiallly young people, are over it. They can have Gareth Pugh designing for them for all he's worth, we still won't care.

I went into a Gap on Astor Place yesterday morning and it was empty--I was the only shopper. Walked over to Forever 21, which is only few blocks away, but each of the four registers had over 5 customers waiting in line. I left because what I wanted wasn't worth the wait (and I had a flight to catch).

Both stores have cheap cotton shit. One new store is doing well; the other old store isn't. And I bet even if the Gap sold the exact same merchandise as Forever 21, they would still do badly.

The Gap, as a shopping experience, is over. Kill it.

A bigger mystery for me has been seeing so many Gap items advertised in mags but never appearing on shelves. From your article re Philo... where's the tunic? Where's the shirt dress? Are they not in new arrivals?

I do merchandising for Gap and I heard this rumor a while back. I didn't believe it until I started to notice how much more I actually wanted to buy the clothes that were coming in. (though I may work for the company, my employee card is EMPTY.)

We got new summer flow today. I bought three dresses at once. If the clothes keep coming in at this rate, it might save the company.

And no, I'm not promoting the company I work for. Just the selected pieces that came in.
