Maybe it’s because we have no desire to see Babel, but here at Fashionista, our most riveting Oscar race is the one for Best Costume Design.
We predict the little gold man will either go to Patricia Field, the extraordinary stylist who bought half of The Devil Wears Prada wardrobe at Century 21, or Milena Canonero, who did the confectionary costumes for Marie Antoinette.
The Pro-Field side says that the Devil’s costumes defined the movie’s characters as much as the acting did, and the transformation of Anne Hathaway from Vassar grad to Conde girl was brilliant. Also, the severity of Emily Blunt’s eyeshadow should get an award of its own.
Meanwhile, Milena’s corner has piles of historical research, plus piles of antique lace and silk, to make its case for a Best Costume Award, and the small anachronisms - barrettes, Converse sneakers, Hard Candy nail polish - that sneaked into some frames might only help the cause.
Whom will the Academy choose? Fashionista predicts Pat Field - if only because she’ll give a hysterical acceptance speech, perhaps unsuited for prime time TV…
