Is The New: Pucci and Burberry?

Is The New, a feature in which we examine changing tastes and replacement style. Please note, we will never say anything is the new black.

The London Telegraph just did a piece on "The New Sloanies" - translation, the next generation of British aristo-girls - and what they've got in their closets. Amid the info on Tattler and Tod's loafers came this interesting idea:

"If she wears a scarf, it will be a Pucci scarf worn loosely draped around the neck."

Ten years ago, the Pucci scarf would have been Burberry. Meanwhile in Whole Foods, Fashionista counted a whopping ten girls in Pucci coats, scarves, or boots... a marked jump from last year, when the brand's swirly neon print appeared fast and short among a sea of black quilted everything. Then there's last month's bash for Pucci and Safe Horizons, hosted by Calvin Klein's former publicist, Annelise Peterson.

Could it be that Pucci is the next big status print? We'll start counting the swirls on the streets and get back to you...

Are you reading my mind? Because I saw some crazy neon coat at Barneys CoOp yesterday and thought the same thing. That is spooky.

I have the most amazing Pucci snowboots... but I don't live anywhere near the snow.

Pucci has been doing less expensive gateway items for a few years now. Casey's snow boots are one example, as are the scarves (so much less expensive than Hermes!)

The big sign that Pucci is the new Burberry will be when we see similar brightly colored graphics being sold to and worn by people who do not even know the orginal reference.

Much of the ascendancy of Burberry can be tied to an overall fashion obsession with logo-mania. Since in some ways that seems to have passed, can Pucci ever be as big? (Like remember when there was only one "IT" bag every season?)

If fashionista saw 10 girls in Pucci at Whole Foods, I would advise skipping it and heading for the next brightly-colored graphic luxury line - Missoni.

Word. Missoni is totally hotter than Pucci.
