Fairy Tale Weddings Turn Literal

Today Disney announced a new initiative: princess bride dresses. Inspired by the Disney heroines who inevitably marry (all of them except Pocahontas, I think…), the gowns are for grown-up women approaching their wedding day. Designer Kirstie Kelly shared her sketches for the line with the Wall Street Journal, and here’s where it gets interesting:

“As Ms. Kelly sees it, Cinderella is “classic glamour” — the dresses in her line come in high-shine satin with ball-gown skirts and make generous use of silver embroidery and crystals. Snow White has a slightly more conservative look dubbed “sweet elegance.” Ariel and Jasmine models are considerably racier. Ariel, who played the title role in “The Little Mermaid,” has a “sultry allure” and is “comfortable showing her body.” Jasmine, from “Aladdin,” is “bohemian chic,” and her various dresses are big on sheath and lace.”

Isn’t it funny that now, we’re given permission to see Ariel and Jasmine as sexy? Cinderella too – Annie Leibowitz recently shot her, in the form of Scarlett Johansson, for an upcoming Disney campaign…

pocahontas gets married in the second movie. :)

Pocahontas gets engaged in the second movie not married

This is so sad – is Disney that desperate for sales? Please leave the fashion to the professional designers. That dress makes me want to puck – honestly.

This looks like a prom dress; I would think a girl, especially a young one, would want to look mature AND elegant for her wedding.

I think it’s great. If they had been making Belle’s dress for my wedding, it would have been all mine!!!

I don’t know…last time I checked, Kirstie Kelly WAS a professional designer. A very good one at that. I think a lot of women will go for it, and who knows, maybe it will actually work.

Demi, puck is spelled PUKE…if you’re going to hurl epithets at Walt Disney, at least spell them correctly.

I think if a girl wants a disney wedding then she will want the whole thing disney including the dress.

I’m not a big fan of Disney movies and would never consider a Disney wedding but, with that said, I think the dress would be beautiful for someone who DID want that. Obviously these aren’t designs for everyone but to say that someone who would like it must be immature or doesn’t want to look elegant was kind of off base. I think a mature person could pull this off and look very elegant in doing so. The wedding day is so much about the Bride and if this is what makes her feel good that day then so be it!!!!

I would like to see the other dresses. I am curious about what they look like. Belle was my favorite Disney character when I was growing up. I wonder what her dress looks like.

I would consider it if it was AFFORDABLE

I love the idea, go ahead with it it going to be great!!!!

i think its great! who wouldnt want to look like a princess on her wedding day.I would definetly consider them.

THIS IS GREAT, ESPECIALLY AS SWEET 16 DRESSES….

Where do I order one?!??!!?!?

I like the idea, but also would like to see the other dresses as well. I am also curious to know the costs…..do I need to start saving now or will I be able to afford it off a months pay?

What girl doesn’t like to dress-up as a princess? Now us “older girls” can have that fairytale wedding we’ve dreamed of. I’d love to see what they do with other characters, like Mulan and Tinkerbelle.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!!!

I’ve seen the sketches for the dresses. They are all elegant and beautiful, but the cinderella sketch and the gown in the picture are a bit different. I don’t know if each one will be different than the sketches. I can’t wait to see how they all turn out though!

Ugh, NOW they come out with this?!? I’ve been searching for the perfect dress for my Little Mermaid themed wedding for TWO YEARS now! My wedding is in less than a month…no chance to get the perfect Ariel dress now! Oh well, there’s always the vow renewals down the road….

OK. Isn’t there a difference between playing dress-up and real life? Grow up girls!!!

I wish that they would have these dresses out when I had my wedding. I don’t think there is anything wrong with being in touch with the little princess in side of me. Living in Florida all my life, I grew up with Disney. I LOVE DISNEY!!! I wonder if they will come out with attire for the men. That way the princess will have her prince.

Demi & Allie…..if you’re going to hurl epithets, hurl them at The Disney Company – not Walt Disney – the poor man is dead.

I think i should sue disney for always showing girls a prince charming and a happily ever after, If your married it is nothing like they show you when your a little girl where is my bibbi-di-bopp-i-di-boo.

I had a disney style wedding when I got married. I had a mickey and minnie wedding topper, mickey and minnie champagne glasses and the cinderella carriage as my gift box. Everyone loved it and now 10 1/2 years later Everyone still mentions it. Disney weddings can be romantic and beautiful if done right! If I had the chance to get cinderella’s dress to wear I’d do it in a minute! We even went to Disneyland for our honeymoon!

Where can I buy stocks?
Everyone has their favorite cup of tea, and this flavor will appeal to Disney fans worldwide – adding to its already overflowing pot of success. I foresee a Belle wedding dress for my daughter, Jasmine.

I totally love the idea. Speaking for myself…I dreamed of being a princess when I got married. Who doesn’t???? Unless you are a heshe. I think that maybe a lot of women want to look and feel like a princess no matter what age. I am now 42 and still want to feel like a princess. I would want my Husband to treat me like that. Why not? It’s nice. You may not always end up with a Happily Ever After with a Prince Charming. I don’t think he is really out there but…a girl at least deserves the perfect dress and wedding. When my daughter gets married in the next year or two I would love to get her one of those dresses. She is all for it. If you want a happily ever after… why not? It may not be every girls dream to be a princess as I read from some…maybe they couldn’t pull it off. Ha, but…I’ll leave it at that. I love the dress and good luck with the idea.
Marsha

I did a little research and the dresses will cost about $1,100 to $3,000.

I want to be buried in that Cinderella dress, because only then would I be caught dead in it.

I think it i beautiful myself… I would definately consider a dress like that… I would also love to see the other dresses also… I used to dream of being a princess when i got married also alot of women do… It is their day to feel as beautiful and wonderful as possible…But good luck with it i think i great…

The actual dresses aren’t going to look like the ones being marketed now for little girls with bright colors and polyester. The sketches for them actually look very nice … they’re only INSPIRED by the characters of Disney, not modeled exactly after what you see in the movies. People need to calm down … nobody’s making YOU wear one on your wedding day, I think it’s great that the people who do opt to wear a Disney Princess edition ELEGANT wedding gown can now do so.

As soon as Disney comes out with an African-American inspired princess, I’ll consider buying a gown. Until then, no way!

I have no problem with being a princess. But then look at the name I have and have lived with for over forty years. And I am a BLONDE!!! Everything I own is pink and has my name somewhere. Even my 20-year old daughter gives me Barbie stuff. I think those of us who like those beautiful things should have them. Dumi, I’m sorry — Demi, should learn how to SPELL and learn how to CHILL!! She must have had a horrible childhood if she can’t relate to a princess!!

Everyone has said some really great points. l think for some it will work and for others it won’t. It’s all based on personal choice and normally whatever Disney World puts out, it sells. So I have no doubt that this will be any different. They are geniuses over there and know exactly what they are doing…..CHA CHING!!! Money in the da bank, Mickey what ya drank?

umm guys didnt you guys click on “the Wall Street Journal”? It says the prices on there, the dresses would round to 1,100-3,000…and i agree with “trsh”, if this is what will work for others, than who is it hurting? I think it is a great idea! I want to see the other dresses!

What a racket. Now Disney wants to take over the multi-billion dollar bridal business. I think part of the problem is that too many young girls are raised on Disney and buy into that whole princess thing. You hear these girls calling themselves princesses and demanding all sorts of things that they think they deserve and can’t really afford. I think that looking your best for your wedding day is what every bride wants. Buying a Disney princess dress is buying into the whole “I am a princess” thing and focusing on the wedding only, and not what comes after, which is often times less that a happily ever after.

I think it is great because that is exactly what I want to be a beatuiful princess.and I love the full soft dreamy look

No, puck is spelled puck, and puke is spelled puke.

um…wow

I am getting married on July7th of this year in Disney. Personally, I would love to have a Disney dress to complete my theme.
My fiancé and I love Disney :)

aww! 7.7.07! I think eva longoria is getting married that day too…
i would love to get married in disney.

I think this dress is beautiful. I am 36 and I would carry this dress off well. It takes a certain bod though. A lady under 5’7, with a chubby body wouldn’t work well here.

I am 36 and I think that dress is beautiful. I could wear this dress well. However, you have to have a certain body type to pull this off. I think a lady under 5’7, or a chubby lady could not wear it. I guess it would depend on your bone structure.

dear cristy. You’re an idiot. You’re 36; turn off your computer, it’s been 9 hours, take care of your children, then go to the gym and…forget that; get a book and r-e-a-d it.

I am proud to say that I live life off of the computer. It is truly sad and pathetic for me to finally come to the realization that America is coming to it’s ultimate demise. We Americans wonder so vastly why the world despises our presence on this earth, and now I understand why. I am seizing at the mere thought of our nation’s women spending their afternoons chatting about their body figure in a multi-billion dollar industry mass factory product. On a computer.
Truly, the end is near.
