Marni Asks, “Are We There Yet?”

marni.jpg
Flicking through the Marni runway and all I can think of is “rush” - the thrill of something so right and so fun and so out of my budget I’ll scheme to buy it.

Also, the hurry you can almost hear from the clothes - “Are we in the future yet? Are you ready for me yet? Come on, I’m dying to get out and be with you!” It’s like the outfits are Cabbage Patch Kids. You want to pluck them and take them home, and most important, you want to make them a part of you.

It’s exciting, for sure, and it’s also full of friction: the runways this season are rife with debate. One party wants to stay linear, to keep fashion safer and more relatable by pulling refrences from the past. The Gucci runway is a great example of this; everything was wantable but absolutely nothing was new. Meanwhile, the Marni contingent wants to push fashion forward to somewhere newer, scarier, and maybe less believable - would you wear a nylon bubble dress to work? Would your sorority sister from college? Would your mom?

Here’s the fun part: the fight might be happening on the catwalks, but the decision is up to you: whatever you wear this spring, this summer, this fall… that determines the future. As for me, I’m voting for Marni - except for the huge totes, which look like bean bags and could probably fit an entire model inside.

nope, those plastic chains have been in play for a few years now... will do some research and see if I can find the starting place. my first instinct is the Gemma/ Daria Prada campaign though Marc's Fall '05 show could be it, too... will dig for you.
