DIY: Anya Hindmarch Bag

Not Plastic.jpgnot plastic fashionista.jpgIt’s a classic fashion moment:

The Anya Hindmarch sack that screams “I Am Not a Plastic Bag” only costs $10, but because it’s not available in America until June - and because it’s already sold out in London - we’re reduced to making our own inspired version for $17.50!

If you’re desperate to carry Lily Cole’s accessory - or just into carrying your own cloth bag when you shop, instead of accepting the hundreds of plastic bags you use for clothes and grocery shopping each year - follow these simple instructions…

You’ll need: A thin cloth bag (ours came from American Apparel).
Fabric paint in a complimentary color to the bag.
Fabric letter stencils.
A soft pencil.

Step one: Lay out your Plastic Bag quote on the bag with your stencils. We used the one from Anya’s bag but other phrases could be “Plastic, Fantastic, Inevitable,” or “The Plastics Were The Most Important Girls in School” or “Plastics, Benjamin.” We also like “Pretend It’s Dior.”

Step two: Stuff your bag with a flat, hard magazine. Trace the stencils with your pencil to make sure you’ve spaced the letters the way you like them.

Step three: Fill in the stencil spaces with your fabric paint. We left all the letter gaps open in an homage to the House of Holland; you can do what you like. Don’t forget to draw a little bow on top of your bag - a tribute to the Anya Hindmarch logo!

Step four: Wait 15 minutes to dry. Arrive at a fashion party wearing a mini dress and the bag, and claim to be Lily Cole’s assistant at the door. Promptly find and seduce a Trovata boy.

Plain old acrylic paint usually works wonders for me, with this sort of thing.

I need to tun by chinatown and find one of those rectangular-bottomed, super-structured canvas or raffia bags...my shopping takes up more room than an AA bag can offer, sadly.

also, I wonder if I dare to attempt it free-hand...

oh, and: the fact that the knockoff cost more than the original: fabulous.
