Is The New: Strawberry and Forever 21?

Mar 29, 2007 @ 9:05am

diorjg5.jpgAt a stylist's apartment this weekend, I spied a suspiciously cute sweater dress - black, slightly sheer, and shaped like the torso of a rock star.

"Did Stella McCartney have a sample sale?" I asked.

When her face turned red, I thought it meant, "Yes, and I didn't tell you because secretly, I haven't forgiven you for that one time in London."

Instead, she confessed something different.

"It's not Stella," she said, "It's Strawberry. I don't know what ever compelled me to go in there, but now it's like my new Forever 21 - only even cheaper and less crowded. I'm obsessed."

I heard the same story from three other girls last week.

Tell me you've heard it too?

It's true. My co-worker is currently outfitted an awesome sweater dress from there and it's adorable.

I always thought Strawberry was decidedly not cute, but then I saw about four REALLY cute girls in Sohocarrying bags from the store, and I MAY have changed my mind.

It's true... but only recently! Like, a few months ago, I went in for the first time and got a plaid jumper, a black sweater dress, a neckerchief, and a pair of hilarious leggings with both tiger stripes and leopard spots AND sparkles that I haven't worn yet.

This feels like an ad. Including the comments.

My co-worker was recently wearing a cute pair of animal print ballet flats with a quilted patent leather section over the toes, and she had so many people complimenting them and asking where they were from that she was forced to tell me she bought them at Strawberry. She said the exact same thing about wandering in one day and loving a whole bunch of stuff, but she was speaking in a hushed voice the entire time and asked me not to tell anyone that she shops there. I have a strong aversion to the place, but after this post I am starting to think it might be worth a look...

I've been shopping here for years -- not for clothes but for jewelry. I love the discount places...I understand why people don't want to admit that they shop there, but it's so silly!

Fashion is so confusing now; as soon as some style hits the airwaves, it's immediately knocked off by a low-end brand or major discounter anyway...so shopping discounter's like Strawberry's is the best way to trial a look without spending much.

And quite frankly, the salespeople are so much nicer than at high or indie boutiques. They don't act like fashion is such a big deal and they leave you alone so you can scour the store with no pressure!
