Anne Curry to Sally Singer: “Are Their Names Really Coco and Chanel?”

Thanks to Fashionologie for this Today Show video, where Sally Singer narrates a clothes parade with Stam, Hilary Rhoda, and Patricia Schmid.

The best part seems to be when Coco Rocha and Chanel Iman hit the runway at the same time, and Sally says, “Here we have Coco and Chanel.”

Also: Anne seems to be genuinely shocked that Sally mixed Target shirts with things by Oscar de la Renta. We can’t decide if this is funny or scary, as if Anne Curry has never worn a Burberry jacket over a Hanes t-shirt in her life.

But speaking of high-low pairings, isn’t it interesting that Miu Miu is the most referenced designer on this Today Show runway - and also the upscale label that got the most play in its corresponding Vogue story?

That video was revolting, the host sounds like an idiot.

i expected so much more from the segment, like the models actually speaking, considering they're supposedly bringing back the personality and vivre of the supermodel era.

the host did sound dim, but probably 98% of the viewers have the same layman's knowledge of fashion that she does, seeing as the most scintillating question she can muster is if coco and chanel are their real names.
i also liked how they completely neglected referencing the sept 2004 cover as the last big models cover.

Perhaps Anne Curry was paying attention during class, rather than sneaking a peak at Vogue magazine behind her trapper keeper. She would never confuse there with their.

Sov, I appreciate your view that some things are more important than fashion, but saying style is only for dummies is a tired argument.

Vera Wang and Kate Spade are just two examples of women who have managed to build very smart empires based on clothes, and Cathy Horyn and Sally Singer are some of the most intelligent social critics that America has. Robin Givhan at the Washington Post has a Pulitzer Prize for a fashion story she wrote - even Lily Cole is going to Cambridge University!

Come on now.

Also, I see no incorrect grammar in this post, but that could be because I'm exhausted.

i think ladySOV means in the title for the post, it's there instead of their. but keeping us readers posted on fashion news is hard work, so spelling errors are small fries. if one really wants to see egregious spelling and grammar, look at chanel iman's myspace.
but i agree, an interest in fashion does not equate to stupidity in other areas. clearly people who read this blog are interested in fashion, and as a reader i expected a more discerning feature from the today show about the vogue cover. however, the today show is for the broad american public, most of whom aren't into fashion as i am and the today show caters to that broad demographic.

I love that I didn't even look at the title. Changing it now, but I still think the larger argument stands

- the really stupid people are the ones who follow fashion blindly, or who think that it has no relevance to "real issues."

But thanks for noticing the title, because I wouldn't have!

Mash note to the F word:

Like it or not, visual identity, design, marketing – aka style – shapes our world. Personal style aside, what area of life is immune from fashion? Religion, science, business, the arts all flicker at its whim. Our collective culture is defined, recycled, reinvented and innovated through the ever-changing vision of its interpreters.

My spelling is atrocious and my grammar is a horror. Far from intelligent? Perhaps, but maybe smart enough to know:
* the international economy is interwoven with the thread of the fashion industry
* the style pages feature the best fantasy sports ever
* Anna's desperate to sell those white Gap shirts

Blah, blah, blah...

Fashion is fun... and funny, as evidenced by this video :-)

Anon 6:04, just wondering, but did you get Chanel's myspace from my blog?

Where were Agyness and Sasha?? My favs!

Oh and also, Miuccia Prada has a PhD in Poly Sci (I forget where it's from)...

Also, I think the whole "fashion is for dummys" thing has well seeped itself into fashion school-- most of the people I go to school with are complete morons. "I like clothes and don't get math, I should study fashion!!" No.

@ Casey

Funny but I took a different route. For me it was, "I want to afford clothes and don't get math, I should study Law!!" Sad but true...
