Can Rodarte Save The Gap? Or: Can The Gap Save Rodarte?

rodarte gap.jpg
We were about to write a post called “Why We Don’t Care About The Gap’s New Designers,” and then we changed our minds.

Here’s the deal: The Gap announced some new diffusion pieces by CFDA/ Vogue darlings Doo.Ri, Thakoon, and Rodarte.

At first we yawned, but then we realized: This could be Rodarte’s big chance to change their tides.

Of course, Rodarte has incredible support from Vogue and Bergdorf Goodman, but there’s another powerful faction (led by Cathy Horyn at The Times) that can’t appreciate the puffy silver pieces they sweep down their runway (in fact, the phrase “Sci Fi Convention” comes to mind).

If Rodarte’s pieces for the Gap are beautiful, wearable, and inspired by something besides Lord of the Rings, they could win some converts in the fashion world, and some shoppers in the real world.

Doo.Ri’s defection to the Gap is also interesting, considering her mentor is Mickey Drexler, a Gap refugee who now heads J. Crew…

is j. crew a 2x loser? they seem to heart Rodart too... maybe it's a stretch, but consider:

spring last year at rodart

spring this year at jcrew

ps: this season's Rodatr Christian Louboutin's are even more dreamy...

Eh, I don't think cloying bows on pumps was a Rodarte invention, and the shape and color of those shoes are quite different.

Also, repeat after me:

R-O-D-A-R-T-E!

I thought it would be actual pieces (i.e. dresses, skirts, pants, jackets, etc...) but it's only white shirts.

Hardly anyone buys white shirts from the gap. If they want to stick within the family, they go to banana.

I got excited for a second then just put my head down. Maybe the shirts will prove me wrong?

ps. I agree with Faran. The Rodarte heels are different from those of the j.crew ones. yeah they have bows, but at least j.crew didn't just grab some fabric and forget to cut them after a certain length.
