I'm Not a Plastic Blog

Apr 13, 2007 @ 9:36am

anyanotplastic.jpgAnya Hindmarch finally releases images of her American non-plastic bag, which is brighter and has navy blue lettering.

It's not available until June, but Bagsnob reports Anya boutiques around the country are now accepting pre-orders.

Of course we called right away, and here's what they told us:

*The bags come into the store June 20th (thanks Isabel!).

*If you don't pre-order the bag, you may still get one, as they're holding a stash for walk-in customers

*The bags must be shipped to you; you can't just do fashion takeout, you must also order delivery.

*The cost of the bags here is $15. The cost of shipping is also $15, bringing the grand total of your new bag to $30.

What they didn't tell us? That maybe, just maybe, the hype isn't as necessary. Remember when Roland Mouret for Gap provoked fistfights among London shoppers, and then here in America... well, I just saw one of his dresses on the clearance rack, still.

Do you think this bag will cause a riot?

Considering I've seen the UK version up close here at work in the fashion dept. & sorta fell in love with how perfectly adorable it looks on the shoulder, I still ordered myself one. It's cute, functional, and I kinda like that the US version has navy blue lettering instead.

Then again I am a total bag whore so I'm completely biased.

When I read your GAP/Mouret post on IS, I knew I should become a disciple. That said the Mouret XS's were gone in 30 min after open on the 5th Ave, so no stampede but worth planning ahead for.

The 60th st. Anya store told me there was a limit of 2 but that the $15 shipping likely covered both. Once you factor that in, shipping is less egregious. I'll give the other one to my fiance's sister, the Vegan Nationalist.

Will you be going out for the GAP White Shirts?

i'm in london right now, so i've seen the original beige one of these everywhere. i really like the intention of these bags and the environmental statement, but i'm worried that because it has become so fashionable, it has trivialized what the bag is really about and made it lose it's political message... what do you guys think?

i think it is actually a good thing that this bag has become fashionable. anything that helps the environment is a good thing, and if it's en vogue to carry canvas bags instead of using plastic ones, there's nothing bad about that. i am still debating whether to get the anya or lauren bush's feed bag...both have a great purpose but the money for feed bag goes to hungry children. ahh... i'll probably end up with both!

Hi Fashionistas

I just want to point out the bag will not be in store until June 20th- NOT June 1st!
I want to avoid any confusion after the London launch sold out of their bags within hours!

I got on the list for a UK edition last month through wearewhatwedo.org, but they were only shipping to the UK, not US. I prefer the beige, and hopefully the price will come down on ebay (or I'll go to London for a quick trip!). I wasn't going to order the navy, but I did it anyway, it's going to be featured at Whole Foods later in the summer. I sincerely hope it doesn't become a fad.

i love this bag and what the statement stands for. i live in San Francisco and our city officials have just passed a ban on plastic bags from grocery stores, so the timing of this bag is perfect!

i hope this not only becomes a fad but a trend as well! the more people to buy the bag the better. but ladies please use the bag not only as your purse but also as a market bag, as an environmentalist (who writes about "green luxury") neither paper nor plastic is good. canvas has always been better!

happy shopping!

It seems everyone is coming out with their own reusable shopping bags and I find it completely misses the point of reusing, well, bags you already own.

I have several old beach totes (including a Fendi tote that's over 15 years old) and store plastic bags, and when I head out I always grab a tote and put some plastic bags in it and there I go.

I'll never run out of plastic bags because as much as I try, there are always times when I forget to bring spare bags or I haven't brought enough. I have brought my consumption of bags way down though.

That being said, this bag is very pretty and for the price I would buy a few, for mall shopping, though, not for the market. Can it go in the washing machine? PVC bags have the advantage of being wipeable.

yes, i think there will be a frenzy and i'm not very big so i fear i might get hurt in the hustle. i already haul all my things around in my l.l. bean boat and totes, but this? this i might take an elbow to the eye for.

I avoid pvc as it's bad for the environment and for one's health. I pre-ordered two of these from the LA Anya boutique. I can't wait to get them! I'll begin to re-use my plastic produce bags too.

there will still be a huge interest but it looks like it will be well stocked this time around. and those who want it are already pre-ordering. so no, there probably won't be a riot.

I will be pre-ordering 2 also... there won't be a frenzy and lots of people will have it, but that doesn't really deter me. I like the idea of being able to help the environment by doing something small...
