Audrey is Coco Chanel. Zut Alors!

audrey.jpg
Just in case you’re making a weekend blog stop for fashion info and not funny comments, here’s something new:

Variety announced that Audrey Tatou will play Coco Chanel in the latest film about the designer.

Some of you called it from the very beginning
, but we still wonder if Audrey is reckless and ruthless enough onscreen to pull it off.

Remember, Coco Chanel wasn’t exactly Cinderella - although she pulled herself up from an orphanage and built a fashion empire, she did have to pair up with a Nazi and lose quite a few friends in the process.

Will Audrey be too sympathetic in the role? And how much input did the House of Chanel have in her casting? Remember, since they’ve trademarked the name Coco Chanel, they have to be consulted - and at least tangentially involved - in any commercial project that involves the designer.

I think that Audrey Tatou is a great choice because it's a film about Coco's early years, so she can be a little bit more symatique. But they could have gone with a really cool unknown French actress like how Clemence Poesie is famous now because of Harry Potter!

THANK GOD they went with someone French. Can you imagine the trainwreck if they cast someone American? (and I love you, Natalie Portman, but I'm looking at you.)

Audrey somewhat resembles Gabrielle in her early years. I wonder what the actual storyline will be.

Perhaps they had too much to do with the casting... I can't really imagine her as Coco. Her face is just too sweet and innocent and child-like?

I look forward to this movie though.

I wish it had been Ludivigne Sangier, or however you spell it, with dyed brown hair! Audrey is too innocent and precious!

Meh. It's a conservative business choice. Audrey Tatou is the only young French actress with enough global box office recognition, thanks to Amelie and Da Vinci Code. But that doesn't make it good casting. Tatou always look so bewildered and helpless.

The french actress best poised to handle this role is Marion Cotillard who stars as Edith Piaf in "La Vie En Rose." She's got the inner brawniness to serve up a fierce Coco.

i second garden gnome on that...Marion was also really good in Love Me If You Dare (a lesser known Amelie-esque french movie) if anyone's seen that. she's definitely got a little more spunk than Audrey.

I think you guys are definitely not giving Tatou enough credit. Having seen many of her performances other that Amelie and Da Vinci Code (didn't see that one, actually), I think she is quite capable of creating a manipulative Chanel. For those of you who believe she looks too cute, that will in the end be rather handy- you know all those teenage girls who pretend to love you but then stab you in the back? Tatou will be able to use her look in a similar manner to that -- Chanel was quite underestimated because of her sweeter appearance, and then she went on to wow them all. And fairly recently I did a research paper on Chanel, so I know alot about what recreating her early life will entail. I believe Tatou can pull it off.

onscreen i find audrey really really boring. she even made da vinci code's character really bland. i have seen her other movies as well and never think she can deliver good emotions or characteristic. just like someone said
; it is a business choice.

What is frustrating is that they will most likely paint Chanel in a very favorable light and probably omit the whole Nazi thing.

They tend to glorify people and forget the bad things they have done.

I'm so excited that everyone is so excited about this film!

My best friend Sarah works in the film business in LA, and she emailed to remind me (really, to remind us) that there are actually three Coco pics in the works, so if we don't love Audrey in the role, there are two other chances...

I was about to say Marion Cotillard, but you guys beat me to it! Can't wait for the Edith Piaf movie.

That being said, I do enjoy Audrey Tatou. I hope she can pull it off.

Having seen Audrey in some of her darker roles, I'm willing to give her a chance. I do wonder if Chanel's involvement will mean a whitewash of Coco's story.

She is perfect for the role. She is more than Amelie and Da Vinci Code.

Since we're talking about Marion Cotillard--I agree: so amazing as La Mome--has anyone noticed how pretty she is in the new Chopard ads ...and how strangely she ressembles an Olsen?

as an american myself, i have to agree with Nadarine - it would've been insulting had they chose an american to play the role of such an influential french designer.

anonymoose thanks for the movie tip, i'm going to try and find that movie
