Are You To Dye For?

vivienne poplights.jpg Last week, ELLE showed us the return of logos.

Today, their ’90s flashback continues with an ode to Manic Panic, which they’ve renamed “Pop Lights.”

Among their proof-of-trend: Rachel McAdam’s bubble gum streaks and Joss Stone’s questionable red tresses.

Meanwhile, the designers pulled for this story - Vivienne Westwood, Antoni and Alison, and Zandra Rhodes - are all based in London, where punk and ska influences still linger, street trends hit the runway more quickly, and catwalks are styled like a circus and not like a beauty pageant.

Still, Marc Jacobs dyed some of his girls deep blue and purple, and we’ve seen blondes paint a few lavender highlights into their hair and look gorgeous -

Would you do it?

Joss Stone has already dyed her hair a far more flattering dark brown color. Hopefully the magenta is out of her system.
Does anyone know why Rachel McAdams went for the pink streaks? They were cute for one event or magazine cover, but when she was sporting them for months I got a little worried. Was it for a part? If not they were a bit much for someone in her 30s.

Unfortunately they weren't for a part - she just thought they would be fun, and apparently hasn't changed them.

I like the idea of violet streaks on a blonde (really thin ones, that is), but I am a dark brunette, so I think anything would be imperceptible and probably hideous. And I suppose I like the idea for an editoral, etc., but for real life? Probably non.

Um, no. I'm far too conservative in the hair department for that. As for Rachel McAdams, I liked the pink. I also loved Gwen Stefani's hair back in the day.

Joss Stone on the other hand looked like a freak show. She looked like an over dyed poodle. It was heinous.

How about the model who died her bleach blond hair blue for MJ and then MJ hid it under a hat for the show anyway? Despite the model being "over the hill" a world famous designer had always been loyal to her and was furious when, with 48hour till the show, she showed up with neon blue hair that wouldn't "wash out".

Honey, I DID do it - back when I was 22 and punk was coming 'round the first time (yes, I'm THAT old). The color was aubergine - think fuschia-tinged eggplant - from Manic Panic, and it rubbed off on EVERYTHING, including my hats, pillow case and even the white wall behind my then-boyfriend's bed, where I'd prop my head while reading a book. Good times.

Been there, done that. In high school 6 years ago. The blue was only pretty for the first week, and then it turned a gross algae green. However, purple is highly recommended, as it faded beautifully.

Would we or did we? I think that's a better question ... Being a bright, golden blonde, I did purple and pink streaks in mine and would do it again, if not for the office job. Of course, this was back when Kurt Cobain was still alive and my future was so very, very bright.

BUT I do love when the runways are filled with bright, vivid hues and fashion takes a whimsical turn. The hair color adds pop and at least makes the models look less drone-like than usual.
