People We Like

Mom Jeans (and shirts, and jewelry…)

13style.1.jpgWe love the Times Magazine spread where style icons wear their moms’ clothes.

Irina in her mother’s peasant blouse and Aerin Lauder in Estee Lauder’s diamond bracelet elicit a particular “ooh” factor.

Also, we never even knew Maya Rudolph’s mother was a famous ’70s singer until we saw the piece.

The story reminded me of my own favorite piece of clothing, a sheepskin coat from the ’70s that was made just for my mother, and in high school, I started wearing it.

When I thought of it shoved in the back of my closet, it made me wonder -

Have you ever gotten a great style piece from your mom or grandmother? Send photos!

Moss green silk cheong sam that my grandmother had made in Hong Kong in the 70s. Mid-60s White cotton empire dress with unusual flocked daisy print from my godmother. Cream satin halterneck gown, made for my aunt in the mid-60s. 70s Black leather trench with fox collar, from another aunt. 1960s 'blonde' mink, from my grandmother.

Both my father's mother and my great-great-aunt on my mom's side were fashion enthusiasts, so I've inherited some of my favorite pieces from them: a black chanel sheath, a beaded midnight blue cardigan from Europe, and a few handbags and clutches from the 1930s and 40s. From my mother, I've got this great multi calico-print dress that she bought at the Museum of Natural History in the 70s (who knew they once sold clothes??)

My grandmother and I share a family trait of extremely narrow feet. To remedy her shoe buying problem she went to Italy and had shoes made in her width at Ferragamo in the early 50s. I have been lucky enough to inherit all of her Ferragamos and get compliments on them all the time.

I inherited a grey shearling coat that my mom had made for her while visiting Spain in 1973. It makes me feel very luxe whenever I wear it.

My grandmother's wedding ring. She had it made in the late 70's. Its a diamond cluster in the shape of a heart and set on a wide gold band. I love it to death, never take it off and get compliments all the time!

hmm...I have one of my grandmother's crepe sundresses from the 30s, and also her mink stole and black velvet pencil skirt from the 50s. my mom gave me her cognac italian leather boots that she got in '86, and I am slowly but surely inheriting all their jewelry.

which is awesome.

When my mom was in college (and already dating my dad-oops) her Iranian classmate decided she would make a good wife, and wouldnt exactly take no for an answer. So he showered her with jewelry that she obviously couldnt wear...all of which is sitting in my dresser right now. My favorite is a chunky silver cuff with painted ceramic panels. So fun to wear!

ooh, love this post & adore that coat... the stitching, the trim, the cut... rock star / model gorgeous. (and is that the Kate Moss dress?!)

a lady, your grandmother & her sweet little girls could step out of that classic picture & walk into any modern moment...

i'm so nostalgic now... personal treasures:

* my engagement ring (never wear) was my great grandmother's – platinum & diamond & too beautiful for my everyday world – timeless perfection

* my vintage LV speedy (always wear) inherited from my chicest aunt – roomy & dark worn handles & cherished much more for her memory than any logo
