Plastic Credit Card Needed for Non-Plastic Bag

stella shopper.jpg
This weekend, my friend justified her new Gucci shades like this:

“They’re more expensive, so I won’t lose them and I’ll always remember to take them with me.”

We wonder if that can also apply to designer shopping bags, like the new Stella McCartney Organic Canvas tote at left.

It retails for $495 and is meant to encourage women to abandon plastic shopping bags in favor of a luxury carryall.

We think Stella’s eco conscious brand is amazing, but $500 for a shopping bag? Eek.

On the upside, it makes $34.50 seem like nothing for a tote…

Grr, this is exactly what I was afraid would happen. More people would be encouraged to use canvas bags if they could actually afford them, obviously. The J. Crew one is cute though, and Marc Jacobs has some cool ones for $10-$12.

I'm surprised at McCartney. I always thought of her as someone seriously committed to the environment, but this is making a mockery of the cause... OK, it's ORGANIC canvas. so it can be a bit more expensive, but $495?? Somehow, I suspect the women who would be encouraged to "abandon plastic shopping bags in favor of a luxury carryall" don't really shop for their own groceries. It's fine if she wants to sell an overpriced canvas bag by the sheer power of the brand, but please spare us the righteous bullshit. And I'm getting a little sick of everyone jumping on the canvas bandwagon. It's old news, people. In more progressive countries, like Sweden, this has been going on for years. Ikea was selling a canvas shopping bag for 9 swedish crowns 20 years ago. OK, rant's over.
