All from Generation T by Megan Nicolay:
T-shirts were worn by soldiers in WWII and then Hanes tried to market the shirts to civilians starting in 1941. Until the 70s, T-shirts weren't allowed in schools. In 1948, Thomas E. Dewey was the first to use a political slogan on a T-shirt. And Dior featured the first "designer" T in his 1962 collection.

in WWII military issued white undershirts and once people got home it seemed pretty comfortable, althought not entirely acceptable to wear them around... this is also how boxers caught on. but brando in streetcar was also a big one, although apparently not correct. my next guess would be in the late 50s / 60s with concert and band t's
