Vera Wang has an important date tonight in Chelsea, where she’ll gather to show fashion editors her first diffusion line for Kohl’s.
We’re anxious to see what she’s got, though we know it will be closer to her own style – black, elegant, draped – then to her latest runway collection (at left), which broke so many barriers that everyone got dizzy.
Though it won’t create the same frenzy as Proenza for Target, it may offer some sophisticated options to older women on budgets, and that’s exciting.
Meanwhile in Europe, YSL is testing the waters with a capsule collection called Edition 24. Created by YSL head designer Stefano Pilati, the line is called “moderately priced.”
We think that translates to “still really expensive, like Miu Miu,” but we’re still excited to see it.

This is horrible. Vera Wang, I understand. But YSL?
I’m all for capsule collections, admittedly out of self-interest. And it’s okay for most brands to do, since they have very little by way of artistic integrity to compromise in the first place. YSL, however, certainly does. The house has always been the pinnacle for me.
I wonder what Monsieur Saint-Laurent would have to say about this.

Coutorture has some images from the Simply Vera collection (via WWD), and they’ve actually styled it for younger women. I’m surprised how much I like it.
As for YSL, the line starts at about 200 euros and goes up to about 1000. I think it’s a great thing, if Pilati can pull it off.

Thanks Betty, you should comment with info more often!
As for the link in your blog to the Gap’s gap widening, we’ve asked the Gap to tell us how to order British designs, and they’re letting us know if its possible.
Also it looks like Phoebe and Marie for Gap will get here in December.

Seeing that Monsieur YSL practically invented pret-a-porter, if he wasn’t so miserable he’d probably see it as a natural addition to the brand. But he’s probably just cursing in french. At least it’s not called yves yves.

wondering about the Very Vera styling… the fingerless gloves seem MJ-esque, but the v.v. large pom-pon cap? maybe it’s a NY thing? maybe it’s just me?

There’s been several mentions of this in other articles, but I love Vera Wang’s response to why she did the collection. It was something along the lines of how even though she loved doing her RTW collections, she was exicited at the opportunity to produce a line that women all over could enjoy.
Okay, so in retrospect, that’s probably what designers-gone-discount always say …
Oh — and apparently Vera, who does the silk scarves, has taken issue with the name. And VW’s hubby, Arthur Becker has stepped in to help out (?) Interesting. I’m not sure why she would need him to be her muscle in this matter …
(According to a recent Page Six, anyway)
