Where Do Pockets Belong?

amy adams pocket.jpg
SheFinds has a post that makes us extremely sad: an attack on the dress with pockets.

Okay, fine, it’s not really an assault, just a calmly stated preference for keeping “pockets where they belong -– on pants and shorts,â€? but to us, that’s what it feels like.

We’ll be rational (for one second), and say that dresses with big bulky pockets on the front are very hard to pull off, unless you’re Caroline Trentini in the Marc by Marc Jacobs show.

But the dresses with the slit pockets on the side, like the one Amy Adams wore last year to the Oscars (left), and the one Renee Zellweger wore to last week’s Met Ball , and the one we just bought on ShopBop are fantastic and even a bit utilitarian - like the early Prada bags made of nylon.

Right?

Plus, they give you a place to put your hands when you're feeling fumbly and awkward.

I like the pockets; however, I'm not necessarily fond of keeping your hands in them all the time (too casual a stance), but they are practical to hide a little tube of lipstick.

Erin of A Dress A Day (pro-pockets) just did an awesome post on this, what she called a

"bizzarro-world faceoff of Pockets!Erin vs. No-Pockets!Erin"

Here's the link:

Yes, pockets, yes! Guys have the distinct advantage of pockets being a part of nearly eveything they own; it's about time women have the same opportunity. No, it's not a "feminist thing"...it's just convenience. How nice is it to be able to stash ID, credit card, 20 bucks, and/or lip gloss without the hassle of a bag all night? Long live dresses with pockets!

P.S. Shoshanna makes some great ones for summer, as do Mint and Saja. Happy shopping!

I love dresses with pockets! When I go shopping, every dress I pick up I check to see if it has pockets.
Oscar De La Renta and Carolina Herrera have been adding pockets to their cocktail dresses for a few years now!

I'm a big fan of pockets -- handy for discreetly stowing kleenex, lipstick, coat check, etc. Claire McCardell and Bonnie Cashin always incorporated pockets -- even in their more "evening" designs. I agree that one must mind one's stance --fists shoved in pockets are a 'don't' -- but pockets are a necessity! BTW, love the Vince dress.

I love dresses with pockets, as long as they're of the right sort. I have a few dresses with well-placed pockets; one is the little jumper from Zara S/S 07 with the three buttons up the back. The pockets are low -- the bottom seam is on the hem -- and they lie flat against the fabric of the dress.

I also have a Walter shift with patch pockets, which is a little trickier. Granted, I'm a size 2, but I have curves -- normally I wouldn't touch a dress with patch pockets on the thighs, but something about the placement makes it work.

I loved Amy Adams' dress!

Huge fan of pockets. They're like a little secret that no one knows is there until you casually put your hands in them and pose. I'm starting to miss them on dresses without them.

My wedding dress was from Carolina Herrera and had pockets hidden in the folds...they came in very handy when I had to put my engagement ring somewhere during the ceremony.

yes, yes, yes to pockets! In all forms! When I splurged and had two dresses custom-made this winter, I made sure that the seamstress could make them with pockets. If they're done right, they don't add any bulk at all.

Dresses and skirts with pockets are so comfy! And classic, it reminds me of the party dress Bette Davis wore in All About Eve-

pockets!
i love pockets, but one thing needs to be said: if your dress is jersey or something of the like, don't put things in there. otherwise it just causes a unsightly bulges and bumps.

but im still cheering for pockets!
