The Times Style section has an amusing article on an item that, embarrassingly enough, I’d been thinking about for the last few weeks: the fanny pack.
The universally mocked “bag” usually equals lame tourist, but it’s now being reinvented by some very not-lame (unlame?) designers.
Kris Van Assche (newly of Dior Homme) has a day-glow “waist packâ€? that is quite reminiscent of the hot pink one I had circa 1990, though for some reason, it looks leaps and bounds cooler. Not that I wasn’t a pretty awesome six year old…
Meanwhile, Alice Roy’s design is inspired by a coin purse.
But the one that I’m thisclose to requesting as an early birthday present is Philip Lim’s envelope pouch, with black piping.
Of course, there’s always the old Louis Vuitton fanny pack that my friends wore junior year of college. The memory had me almost bidding for one on eBay…
But in the case of a ’90s trend that’s slowly creeping back, does an eBay sighting mean it’s vintage, or just very outdated?

American Apparel has them, if that's any indication of mainstream value.
