A Night Out With ELLE Magazine

rave.JPG
Somebody give ELLE Magazine a curfew.

Their fashion staff must be out at all hours, drinking Crystal Light shooters, posing for photo blogs, and flirting with Jackson Pollis.

How else can we explain their gleeful, glittery embrace of even more hipster hautness?

A quick review:

First, ELLE embraced Kool Aid hair colors, just like Greg K from MisShapes.

Next, they write about their love of huge logo tees, just like Henry Holland.

Then came the ELLE rhapsody on all things neon, as seen on Agyness, Ikeleine, and all seven issues of Super Super Magazine.

And now?

Their feature story is called Rave New World. It’s stuffed with photos of Boom Box, Studio B, and MisShapes. It’s crammed with day-glo nail polish and hot pink lipstick. And it’s further proof that the Crayola streaked style surge we’ve seen for the past two years might be an indelible, glow-in-the-dark mark on our decade.

Or:

ELLE just wants some free Red Bull for their fashion closets.

Can we PLEASE stop saying that the Misshapes inspired Hedi Slimane's aesthetic? Everytime i read that it makes me want to throw up.

What is good for Nylon is somehow worthy of derision for Elle? Can we stop pretending that any of these things (neon, hair dye, logo t's) are still just the style of the fringe?

We're certainly not deriding Elle - we love what they did! We linked them like four times!

I think the whole post calls into question the idea that the "underground kids" are still removed from the mainstream...

FWIW, the model in that shoot, well ...

Shelookalikeatranny.

But I did like the Balenciaga, multi-colored rubber patchwork heels. (I think they were Balenciaga)

the misshapes kids are not the inspiration for these elle looks. i think you are way off in thinking so.....mags like super super and namalee bolle are the inspiration.......pop magazine, and the kids in london are the inspiration.

enough with the misshapes. i can't wait until their 15 minutes are over. faran i think you are smarter than that........but friends can bias you..:(

yuck.......even elle.com got it wrong........hedi slimane vehemently denied that geordon nicol's hair influenced his designs.........hedi was first with the aesthetic, and rockers too like pete doherty.....again, some fashion sources are giving these kids way too much attention.....but then again i guess there is no other scene in the limelight to promote right now.......

Pop just jumped on the band wagon like everyone else. They hardly had the inside scoop.

The look started with Namalee (look in your old Sleazenations), Carrie M., Super Super, House of Holland and M.I.A. Also consider what they are referencing...Katharine Hamnett. New York and the Misshapes have zero to do with it.

I was actually a little bit offended by the credits in the Elle story. I can't believe they would do this whole shoot and not include Cassette Playa or JCDC. These are the artists on the forefront of this trend.

Anyway...time to evolve. What's next kids?

ps. Rachel...I totally know who you are!!!! xoxo

Dear Sally,

I don't know you (do I?), but I feel like you need to start contributing to this site.

The fact that you can slam down a Namalee Bowles reference (and pre Super Super! are you serious?!) is extremely impressive, and I am sort of jumping around on my bed right now because I'm so excited. Seriously, neon fingernails and WoWoW parties do this to me.

Please email faran@fashionista.com and introduce yourself.
