Attack of the Weirdly Expensive Stores

anthro.jpg
Thursday Styles has a piece on the Theory store in the Meatpacking District. Normally the “gee-whiz, we’ve never been in a store before column is kind of trying, but today’s article is actually kind of true.

“For me, high prices are justified if I can fool myself into thinking that something is a luxury brand or created by some mastermind with a unique vision of the world. The clothes here do not offer as much wit, passion or unity of theme as could be had for the same amount at, say, Marc by Marc or John Varvatos.

This got us thinking about other stores that seem overly expensive, considering the quality and the cachet of the brand. And we thought of a serious offender….

Anthropologie.

OK, yes, they usually have cute stuff, but why is it so expensive? It’s basically a more floral Urban Outfitters (owned by the same company), but everything costs five times as much.

A few weeks ago, we stopped by the Fifth Avenue store, and they had the nerve to charge a sale price of $60 for a patterned canvas sundress.

It was nice and everything, except that it was completely ripped along the hem on one side! (All of them were, I think it was some kind of design flaw). Sixty dollars for a torn-up dress? Come on.

Faran thinks Banana Republic’s accessories are shamefully overpriced - you could get a bag at the Prada outlet for less than what they charge! What other stores do you think are fleecing?

j. crew. some of their pricing is hilarious. oh, and aldo got in the habit of selling $400-500 shoes a couple of seasons ago. I can not imagine buying a pair of Aldo shoes overa pair of Miu Miu's or Jimmy Choos at that price.

Banana has good sales on their accessories. I bought a nice $325 leather tote bag for $140 during a sale.

I've mentioned this before, but J. Crew is a serious offender in the accessories department (and oftentimes their apparel).

$300 for a pair of jeweled flat thong sandals from JCREW? Who do think they are; Manolo? The shoes can't be that fabulously constructed because they also sell $15 flip-flops.

I've always thought that about Anthropologie: great clothes, ridiculous prices.

well any company who makes their clothes in china is obviously over charging. or any shoe company, for that matter.
i bought a cute pair of shoes in shanghai for 3$ (!!!) which looked like they were from steve madden. i actually can't justify spending $80 on a pair of cheap flats from there anymore; i'd rather go the extra mile and splash out for repetto/french sole because i know that they are well made and will last longer.

J. Crew pricing is really really hit or miss. sometimes it's actually pretty reasonable (good quality cashmere, for ex, for under $200) but i agree that overall it has gotten really pricey. i think they might be trying to distance themselves from the gap or something, but i need to see quality improve before i'll spend more. they do have alot of sales and outlets, though.

hhmmm, I like Theory's pants, and Anthropologie sells clothes from a lot of different designers, like Tracy Reese and Anna Sui...clothes you can get in other stores as well...LOL, I love anthropologie and their website, you can always find something girly and cute there, and they always have cute things on sale. I did not know that it was owned by the same company as Urban Outfitters, so thanks.
My beef with J. Crew is that like within two months of shopping for ANTYTHING there, it will show up on their site for like 50% off or something...it makes it not worth it to get anything full price there, because you feel like an idiot when it goes on sale for like a fraction of the price.

This is why I don't bother with the high street (except indulging a dirty cheap shoe itch at Office) - watch the sales, the discount stores and eBay, and you can get beautifully-made McQeen and Vuitton and things for the same price as JCrew. I got a leather McQueen trench - runway sample - for the same price as the JCrew Talitha dress.

There is a Theory outlet in Las vegas, even still their sale prices are like 70 bucks and up. The same thing goes for a few other stores there - Elie Tahari, Max Studio, French Connection. But I guess that's the trick that outlets play on you when the store is pricey to begin with.

We are forgetting that Urban itself sometimes has ridiculous prices. Especially their "urban renewal" crap.

Lucky brand is another store that overcharges for their quality of their clothes...and they never really have anything special, and the things they do are hand made and cost a few hundred bucks.

Along the same lines as Anthropologie, one of the lines they carry, Velvet, is horrifically overpriced. I mean, the clothes are gorgeous and comfy and all, but the prices are obscene.

Also, I find Gap to be ridiculously overpriced for what it is. When I was in high school and shopped there more frequently, I had items ranging across four sizes that all fit me.

One tip for savvy shoppers, though: your local Loehmann's (should you have one) will probably have a rack or two of Theory in the Back Room. They also carry Velvet, Vince, Robert Rodriguez, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, and a number of other lines, with surprising regularity and more reasonable prices.

I was recently in a jcrew outlet in Jersey (just passing through, I swear!). I was actually really impressed by the inventory, far better than what I remembered it being in the past. Although, it is your typical outlet scam of clothes made just for the outlet, all of the pieces were based on the basics you could find in the stores from season to season. It was really well made too. I got a cute shirt dress for $50 (on sale) and have gotten nothing but compliments when I've worn it. The point is, wait for the sales or check out the outlets again, they may surprise you.
As for Anthropologie, I only shop there once a year--after Christmas, with the returns money from what my parents bought me.

I like Anthropologie, but mostly for home stuff. There are certain brands I'll buy there if they're on sale. I think Velvet stuff is cute, but I'll only buy it if it's on second mark-down and non-generic.

I love Theory's clothes, but I can't justify their prices, even on sale. The one thing I've ever gotten there was a pair of patent leather orange flats--mismarked at $20.

Anon's comment about Stella McCartney stuff made me think of Michael Korrs's department store line of bags. They usually average about $300 to $500, have no leather, use weak metal in the hardware, and use the silver that flakes and rubs off with any use. I bought a couple on closeouts, and they looked nice at the time. They're so horribly made - the buckles and snaps broke and the silver came off the hardware, so they look old and worn-out with just minimal carrying, and I've never had any bag do that before. I would never get another even if it was free!

My old roommate worked for J Crew (circa 2004, when the prices started to climb) and they made her sit through presentations about how they wanted to compete in the new upscale market and their new competition would be brands like "Seven, Theory, Saks" and I cant even think of who else. They had to look at the other designers and compare them, quality- and price-wise, to make sure they stayed on-message. Granted the store was in the Midwest, so who knows what the deal is out there, but still...

p.s. in high school I used to be in love with Arden B- sometimes they have really amazing seasons where everything is gorgeous, and sometimes they go years with out one decent dres. Either way, the outlet in Woodbury Commons is super-cheap and makes a lot more sense.

I used to work for Anthropologie, and I completely agree: overpriced for crappy quality. Sure, the clothes are totally cute, but no worth shelling out over 100 dollars for something that will rip the moment you wear it. That's why Anthro's return policy is so forgiving - because the quality is so bad, people have to return it. Also, whenever a customer returns something that is damaged, it goes right back to the racks with perhaps 10% off, even if all the buttons are missing. Cute clothes, but the quality is apalling.

J.Crew and other stores are trying to compete with haute couture designers like marc jacobs. So J.Crew and Anthro get you to believe that since it cost more, it is of better quality and their is a demand for it. J Crew want to show they are more high end and fashionable from their previous years. I have been a J.Crew customer for ten years and noticed they jacked the prices way up in the last 4 years. Their shetland cable sweaters used to go for 48.00 are now 68.00 and when they are on sale they are marked down to their old price.

Completely agree with most of the Anthropologie comments. Normaly I will buy Anna Sui, Tracey Reese, Tibi, Joe's Jeans, Ella Moss on sale. Sometimes they have a few pieces that "speak to me" with their uniqueness and end up buying it as well. Always felt Anthropologie was trying to cash in with the whole "bourgeois bohemian" look Chloe made so popular.

As for J.Crew they are trying to reach a more fashion forward costumer without trying to alianate their preppy clientele. A truly difficult thing to do since so many people have complained abut the increase in prices for the basic items. The change started when Mickey Drexler came into the company as CEO and revamped the company. He was the one with the idea of introducing the "limited edition" pieces. Some of the pieces have been very desirable like the shearling toggle coat with fox trim while others are clearly overpriced copies of a designer.

Sorry but I like J.Crew. Overpriced and all. If I show up to a formal event and see 20 other women wearing the same thing cause its affordable, I would stop shopping there. If price is an issue and you like a style at J.Crew, wait a few months, troll the sale section of their web page and every few weeks they mark their sale pages down another 20%. J.Crew is pretty solid on their sizes. If you have any question about what size or style fits you, go into their store, try it on and then buy it at home on their web site or at their outlet. I am a avid J.Crew shopper and the same styles are in their outlet as in their main store a few months previously. Would i go into J.Crew and buy a full priced $500 dress? Absolutely not. I went on ebay and bought it new with tags for $99. Don't complain about labels vs. prices. You are paying for the social stigma that comes with shopping at a place that charges more, doesn't mean you have to pay for it. Check bluefly.com too. They have coupons and regular sales that rotate through different items. If your looking for a dress, wait untill dresses go on sale then use one of the coupons and you can get a Vera Wang dress for 60% of or more. Last rule of thumb... if you can afford it... bargain shop or don't buy it!
