Can You Still Afford Sunglasses?

marc sunglasses.jpg
The International Herald Tribune has a sunglasses story today, and it calls them “the last affordable luxury.”

Of course, they’re also the most fragile of the status accessories:

It’s really hard to leave your YSL ruffle bag in the dressing room at Brown’s, but that’s exactly what I did with my vintage Calvin Klein shades last year in London, and I’ve never seen them again!

There’s always the argument that if you pay more, you’ll take better care of them, but I’ve never found that to be true (see the completely wrecked pair of Prada velvet wedges in my closet). Also, a pair of designer sunglasses retail for $200 - $300, which is roughly the same price as a Miu Miu bag on Bluefly.

Still, the article points out that “sunglasses are the last bastion of hope for those who want to bask in the luxury-label sunshine but can’t afford to keep up with the skyrocketing prices for designer handbags and clothing,” in part because they place designer logos so close to the face (if you’re into that sort of thing).

But just as handbags have gone from $500 to $1000 in recent years, the article describes new premium glasses from Louis Vuitton and other brands, that will sell for double - or even triple - the average price of a designer pair.

Can you still afford your sunglasses, or are you like me - buying twelve pairs at once at Forever 21, then burning through them until they’re all gone?

Urban Outfitters, never more than $20. Left the pair I'd had for a year (long for me!) at the Dolce & Gabbana sale. Replaced them with a pair for $2.19 from Target that I actually like even better.

My mom likes to say things like "macular degeneration" when I tell her my cheap-glasses theory. Oh well.

sunglasses are one of the few things i DONT splurge on. I guess I - 1) know I break/disfigure them within a few days 2) Would rather have someting more unique and creative then I think sunglasses usually are. I have been eyeing the new ivory Chloe frames on ebay though.

I still buy expensive sunglasses, and I do subscribe to the "if you pay more, you'll take better care of them" theory. I know I do. That said, my sunglasses are two years old. I still love them, but it's getting time for a new pair.

I get all my designer glasses on sale either at Horchow or online at bluefly or overstock. Never paid over $150 and I've never lost/broken any. I got a pair of Marc Jacobs that look a lot like the ones above for only $129 at overstock!

I bought a pair of green Miu Miu ones on sale four years ago and haven't lost them yet. I really want to get some Karen Walker ones, but I know if I spend the money on another nice pair, I'll drop them onto the subway tracks.

I used to only wear designer sunglasses, while basically everything else I own is from thrift stores or Forever 21, but in 2003 I lost a $300 pair of glasses after owning them a week, and haven't spent more than 20 bucks on a pair since.

I think this is also the case for designer umbrellas. I've never met an umbrella I didn't lose within a week, so I wouldn't pay more than $10 for one.

check out fabulous fannie's on east 9th street for an AMAZING selection of vintage glasses, as well as frames that you can take someplace else to have lenses put in...my boyfriend picked up a great pair of tortoise shell wayfarer-esque sunglasses there for way less than you pay for actual wayfarers now...i think vintage frames are way more interesting than designer glasses, 90% of which are made by the same two companies (Safilo, Luxottica) anyway.

ummm, that article actually didn't say anything about Louis Vuitton....but it did mention Bottega Veneta (a division of the Gucci Group), a company pretty much synonymous with fabulously overpriced accessories, a la the much-copied woven leather handbag...so i pretty much expect that from them...

I haven't bought any designer sunglasses recently (well, I picked up a gorgeous pair of Vera Wang ones at Loehmann's last summer, but they turned out to have someone else's prescription in them, and I had to return them), but I might consider something Prada for my next pair of prescription ones.

That said, I already wear glasses on a daily basis, and considering that they're a $280 item that I can't really function without, I take good care of them, and I've never lost a pair. I think it's harder to learn to take care of (sun)glasses if you're not a glasses wearer already.

I agree fleur de lys, I hadn't thought about it that way, but I'm a glasses wearer (although during the day more often contacts) and have had the same pair of Chanels for 4 years. I think knowing that I would be dead meat if I ever lost my prescription ones (ie blind and would probably get run over by a truck) has probably transferred to the way I treat my sunglasses.

i bought a pair of handmade cutler & gross in 1988. they were over $200, which at the time was unbelievably expensive and more than my rent. i still wear them every day. every now and then i buy a pair of cheap glasses to mix it up a little, but every morning i go for the fancy ones anyway. i lost them twice and got them back. a hateful ex broke them once, i had them fixed for $100. i can't think of any other material thing that i love more. they also have become my trademark, in a carrie donovan kind of way. long story short, splurge on a good pair of glasses, it's worth it!

I don't splurge on sunglasses, although I recently invested in a pair of Ray Ban wayfarers that should last me quite a while. Even so, I still find myself going back to this pair of white wayfarer-knockoffs that I got for $2 at a marina on Long Island. They say "Bud Light" in tiny letters on one arm, but I don't really care.

I bought a pair from Spitfire at Spitalfields Market for £10 a few years ago and a month later they were promptly out of my cart at Target. Specifically, out of my Marc Jacobs sunglasses case which cost way more than my aviators did --?!?. When Tom Ford's line came out I very much considered buying a $350 pair but never did. For now I'll stick to my 99 cent wayfarers from Party Fair (99 cents 'cause they can fall apart if you drop them..but then you buy 5 pairs for 5 bucks and always have a replacement) or Forever 21.

I'll buy 15$ glasses in the trendy styles (eg oversize or funky colours), but I've always owned a pair of costlier shades, e.g. Ray-Bans, Oakleys etc. I currently wear 80$ Fendi sunglasses I found on the Costco website. They have lots of designer styles for less than 100$ b/c they are not authorised retailers and can therefore sell for less.

I go to White Cat Optical sometimes (UWS) and honestly they have genuine designer sunglasses for $30 (they're from previous seasons). I don't care about seasons, so it works for me. They also sell regular frames for at the same prices. I'm always surprised more people don't know about it.

I would love to purchase expensive sunglasses, but I never could. I just break and/or lose them way too easily to afford to pay more than $10-20. My last few pairs were from Von Maur.

I used to splurge on eyeglasses; I'm more of a contact person now. My last glasses were Gucci and I have worn them to death never lost them.

I agree with Alison about expensive umbrellas; if you don't lose them, they break!

Ms. Cool, I am totally on board with you--I constantly lose/break umbrellas/sunglasses, so I never indulge.

Would much rather indulge in Marni camis that are the ultimate layering pieces... :-)

i have a pair of $500 diors with swarovski crystal hearts on the sides that in a moment of temporary insanity i absolutely needed...but at no point do they reside anywhere but on my face, the top of my head, or in their little satin dust bag so i think the more $$/more care rule applies for me...

I think some people are prone to losing things and some people just aren't. People are amazed that I don't have phone insurance, but I've never lost one or dropped it in a port-a-john. Same goes for sunglasses.

I've never spent much $$ on them because I always *thought* I'd lose them, but I now have a pair of $10 frames with their "tortoise shell" peeling off of them. I also have a $20 pair of aviators that are completely warped. Interesting that we're having this discussion since I decided I'm going to buy an expensive (for me) pair this week.

But designer umbrellas? Please. I've lost so many umbrellas (mainly because I can't put them in my bag when indoors) or had them stolen from outside my apartment that I just buy a $5 Totes one from Target and don't care. I managed to hold on to a Coach umbrella (that my dad got for free somehow) until it broke in a tropical storm.

i love my collection of sunglasses. the most expensive ones i've ever purchased were a pair of rectangular guccis from loehmann's about 5 years ago -- i think they cost me $75. otherwise, i'm the queen of cheap/free sunglasses -- black jackie O frames from anthropologie for $20, metal-frame aviators from a newbury street vendor in boston for $10, a pair of burberry frameless aviators given to me by a friend, a pair of wayfarers (birthday gift), and -- my favorite! -- a pair of giant square chanel frames with quilted arms that were left behind by my brother's ex-girlfriend.

i considered buying these wild multicolor-frame oversize D&G sunglasses when i lived in paris, but the 350€ was too much to bear.

on the topic of umbrellas -- i always buy mine at daffy's. they usually have a decent selection of nicole miller and/or lulu guinness umbrellas for $10-15, as well as plenty of plain solid umbrellas for less than that! if you can brave the store, it's usually worth it, and they generally last longer than your average umbrella.

I never wanted to buy expensive glasses, but last summer I bought a pair of Ray Ban polarized aviators - generic, I know, but I love them to death! - for I think about $250. The quality was so much better than the $20 and $70 ones that I'd never buy cheap ones again. They don't scratch or break when I drop them, they stand up to everyday wear and tear, and they're so much better for protecting eyes. The polarizing works great for road and water glare! I found that because they're higher and I made a bigger investment in them, I've made sure to take better care of them than cheap ones. I'm sold on quality sunglasses!

I most definetly agree that designer sunglasses are an absolutely wonderful investment. For me, at least. I am 20 years old... so Im currently dutifully saving for a marc jacobs bag this summer... but i do love my designer sunglasses. and i have never lost a pair. i have a simple versace for 200, the chanel mother of pearl for 300 something, and a marc by marc pair for 95. I have never lost a pair and i don't think i ever will. however, i don't take very good care of any of them, all of them are pretty scratched. I love all my sunglasses to death... i also am very scared of crow's feet. i can't imagine how anyone could spend that much and leave them somewhere. I think about "cost per wear" if they are $300 but you wear them everyday, then that is much better than all those splurge buys that you never use. I now want a pair of classic wayfarers....

Sunglasses are actually one of the few things I truly splurge on. I got a pair of Dolce and Gabbana's for a birthday present this year and I LOVE THEM. There's never any glare that I usually get with my cheapos, and the bigger size gives the added sun protection. (Is it just me, or does anyone else burn the under eye skin like a KFC chicken tender??)

I wear these everyday, too. I'm a lot more willing to spend extra on an item I'll use frequently than on a 'special occasion' item. It's a quality issue, I guess.
