How Bow Can You Go?

bows.jpg
Bows, ruffles, and hearts are everywhere this summer. We’ve been seeing them on blouses, dresses, headbands, jewelry – you name it. While a bow is one of Marc Jacobs’ signatures, at what point does it cross the line from cute to cloying?

If you add one too many bows, ruffles, or hearts to your look, all of a sudden you start looking like an overgrown child - or a Harajuku Girl on sugar pills.

We like our bows to be highly stylized and definitely not placed right on the bust, as in the Urban Outfitters tank above. And we’re okay with a limited amount of ruffles - Phillip Lim and Valentino have that mastered - but we draw the line at hearts, especially on underwear.

They have an air of naïve desperation and optimism that weirds us out.

i would much rather wear that tank from urban outfitters than the shirt on the right - it looks like a child's night gown

everything with bows reminds me of my east coast prep school .. all the girls would wear different patterned bows in their hair

I think that tank is cute and I have no problem with hearts. With bows I am more worried about them looking matronly like on the blouse on the right than too cutesy.

Personally I love ruffles and bows and hearts. Just as long as they have a slight quirkiness to them (think Marc and Luella). I think as long as the colors and the rest of your outfit is sophisticated....

The other one is Built by Wendy and I am going to buy it as soon as they put everything on sale for 40% off... as they do at the end of every season.

Oh NOES, not optimism!

I kind of feel like, what I wear on the outside is free for public consumption, but if I want to wear naively desperate underwear, that shouldn't bother anyone but my boyfriend.
