Made You Book

carter books t.jpg
Remember summer reading lists? At our elementary school, if you read twenty books over the summer, you got to attend an ice-cream sundae party in the library in September (This was probably not a good idea from the librarian’s perspective, now that we think about it.)

This soft, garment-dyed books t-shirt from NY-based designer Milton Carter offers an alternative way to celebrate your love of summer reading that beats eating drippy Haagen-Daz in the library with the other nerds.

Carter tells us that the shirt was inspired by “Viet Nam and 60s radical & youth culture while winking at our current situation in the world, and the graphic is based on a collection of vintage books he found in a flea market.

He ways, “the people who had owned these books were so interesting and eclecticâ€? and “it was an inspiration for a way to do a portrait. I think the books I assembled for the still life portray a fringe character w/ eclectic interests… funny, arty, but a little outside. That tee is one of my personal favorites.â€?

We say: can you get away with wearing the shirt without having read the books? Or is that cheating?

it looks like a shirt you'd find at barnes and noble next to the tote bags for books. same color and everything. $60? you gotta be kidding me!

Oh god, must everything Alison Cool posts be so lacking in fashion? She belongs on People Magazine's site or something, not Fashionista.

who even wears graphic tees anymore? honestly. and there's nothing more pretentious than trying to prove you read books.

I think this shirt is best for boys who want to pick up girls who like books. But you can't really wear it while carrying books or it's as silly as wearing a horse-print dress while riding a horse.

graphic tees have definitely been done and dusted, so to speak..
also, who spends $60 on a t-shirt? regardless of what "cool" graphic is on it.

Yesterday's "Can A Concert Change Your Style?" was boring enough, but now we get to hear about something that's been sitting in In God We Trust for a couple years? I do appreciate how Allison is trying to add a new dimension to the site, but can the blog focus on stuff that's actually cutting-edge instead of passe hipster shiznit?

seriously though... why would you spend 60 dollars on that shirt rather than on books? kinda sad...

I think graphic teees are coming back in actually - look at the house of holland shirts! we've been seeing a ton of tees this summer and it looks kind of fresh.

I think what's not coming back in is lame-o ironic vintage or fake vintage graphic tees that have cheesy slogans. Also, I think screenprinted botanical and bird tees are really boring.

Ugh.

T-shirt with books on it = very pretentious.

In fact, they are almost as bad as the t-shirts with Rainier Maria Rilke verses on them.

I prefer the new ones I'm seeing here in Dallas: "Keep Dallas Pretentious" hahaha
As a rip off of "Keep Austin Weird"

I like how pretentious it looks, in an ironic way. It's like saying that you're too cool for school. But $60 is TOO much!

I have this shirt, I bought it last summer at Jumelle in Williamsburg, and I get compliments on it all the time... I am a giant nerd and I work in book publishing so it's a good look for me.

Look: there is nothing about these tees that is faux vintage. And they are not "funny," but some of them are funny, like they have a sense of humor, which you obviously don't.

Aren't you a little embarrassed to be taking fashion so seriously? Clothes are supposed to be about having fun but apparently you prefer being a whiny bitch.

they are faux vintage in that a lot of them have a contrived 60s motif and are clearly made to look old/worn. shirts with the "funny" sayings and purposely ugly/kitschy designs (oh wow the kool-aid man and a lei with sunglasses and one that says "text me", that is so hilarious NOT) are ironic and "funny". i don't see what there is to disagree with there, i'm right on both counts.

whatever, i know what i'm talking about and i know what i meant. shirts with shit on them are old news. let me get back into my time machine so i can go back to 1998 when this was cool and new. why are these shirts interesting and deserving of a blog post? because they're $60 and "intelligent"/allusory? please. go to walmart or delia's and they have washed out fake vintage shirts with 7up logos and things on them for $15. it's the same exact thing and none of it is interesting.

Alison = NYer? Because that sound alot like the program I did when I was younger - http://www.summerreadingnys.org/

Also, I don't think the shirt is anything special. Looks like Urban Outfitters...

Yeah - NY schools think alike!

I think if you go to the website and look at the t-shirt there you might like it better - part of what makes it cool is the actual books that are on it, that's what gives it personality instead of being a random pile o' books.
