As Art Basel becomes a museum gift shop and Milan's Design Week turns into a couture fest, is it any wonder the Venice Biennale is mixing art with fashion? One of it's main draws this year is the Ukrainian Pavilion, where two artists with significant fashion connections are showing-- though, strangely, neither is Ukrainian. Sam Taylor-Wood, the English video artist and photographer who pals around with Kate Moss, is debuting two new video works. Meanwhile, Juergen Teller, the German-born/London-based photographer who shoots ad campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent and Marc Jacobs, is showing new photos (though not of former YSL face Snejana, who actually is Ukrainian). Instead, one of Teller's photos shows a limited edition Vuitton bag next to a stack of nylon shirts on a Kiev street; a depiction of the formerly communist country's current obsession with status symbols and luxury goods. The pavilion's website's photo gallery features an unattributed shot of a Vuitton bag (designed by Marc Jacobs) on fire, which raises one major question: Will Marc still hire him to shoot next season's campaign? --ANNA FIELDING GRIGGS
