Will You Wear a Face?

Monday, Jun 25, 2007 / 10:33 AM

lanvin tanya.jpgWatching the Spring Lanvin show stomp down the catwalk, I whispered, “are you kidding me?” a little too loud.
I got glares, but I stand by my outburst.
Here’s why:
It seems incredibly hard for normal woman to wear a face on her dress, especially a giant blow up face of a movie star, a pop star, or a model.
Great clothes should illuminate the women wearing them, while bringing that woman into a greater context of ideas, environment, beauty – that’s what’s happening when you see a gown on the runway and you gasp.
Putting a woman in a dress with a giant face on it – well, you’re not looking at the girl anymore. You’re looking at the face, and probably comparing it to the face of the wearer. Unless she is Doutzen on the cover of Paris Vogue in that dress, it could be a problem.
Clothing with face-prints may be the fashion equivalent of Avenue Q, the play where humans are visible onstage, but everyone is looking at their puppets instead.
And the Lanvin dress isn’t the only face in stores. Urban Outfitters has The Edie dress, with a giant film print of Ms. Sedgewick’s face around the bodice. Heatherette has gowns with Judy Garland on the front. The new Mulberry t-shirts from Julie Verhoeven also have fantastical faces printed across them -
Can it ever work?

I agree with Faran. Those face dresses were too intense for me.

There was a Harlow tee with Kate Moss’s giant face on it that I thought was alright… and while I don’t think that wearing a dress with the print of an icon’s face on it automatically makes your outfit horrible, I personally would not want to do it…

I say no! They will never work! Quite frankly, they remind me of full page senior pictures in a high school yearbook where the person’s photo is a zoomed-in close up of their face. It’s horrifying, actually.

I hate them. At Lanvin they’re were novel and I was intrigued, but they should have stayed on Lanvin’s runway. Anything past that is just stupid.

Great post, Faran.

Great post, Faran.

The post modern possibilities these present are insane. You could, all at once, style yourself in the image of your fashion hero and visually reinforce the reference through screenprinting. A Kathryn styled as an Edie while wearing an image of Edie.
It is the high end version of wearing a t-shirt in Texas that reads: Texas is for Hotties.

Agreed… I have a rule, never wear a picture of a more beautiful woman than yourself- not that all of us are not, but a photoshop version of Debbie Harry, Kate, Isabella Rosselini, Sophia, etc splayed a mere 12 inches down from one’s face is a bit much.

Lanvin is not for the light hearted or for the masses. The dress is fab and the Lanvin girl ( or woman) should wear it well.

i don’t even read books that have a photo of a person on the cover. takes away from the creative and personal process of picturing what the characters look like for yourself. same way –wearing a face on your clothes takes away the creative and personal process of… creating an allegorical “face” with your clothes and style.

I think its fierce and very brave. LOVE it, but only the Lanvin version. I wish I had one with Holly Golightly’s face.
