Would Basquiat Approve of His Own Reebok?

basquiat reebok.jpg
Reebok has been going nuts lately, frantically churning out new and classic variations on the cushy hi-top. We don’t currently own any sneakers, but we were leaning towards the metallic hi-tops in our shopping imagination.

Then we saw these – the new Basquiat Reeboks, inspired by the famous and doomed 80s artist Jean-Michel Basquiat .

They are a little too wild for our taste, but we could see them looking really cute on the right person.

Either the rest of your outfit would have to be simple, or you’d have to go for a full-on outrageous look head-to-toe. And you still might not pull them off.

Then there’s the issue of Basquiat, who called himself a street artist, getting roped into one of the biggest companies in the world - and one that frequently co-opts urban culture - after his death.

What would Jean-Michel do?

It's the Basquiat estate that authorized these... naturally...

I think he'd be publicly outraged but secretly flattered.

These are awesome. I'd totally spend an hour trying them on in the store and debating their merits, only to decide that no, Reeboks STILL make my ankles look fat, and then hating life when I see them, a black slipdress and a hoodie on some chick in Hoxton the next day.

these used to be my cheerleading shoes in high school (and this was in the late 90s, not the 80s). most comfortable shoes ever.... once you break them in.
