Adventures in Copyrights, Part 30

prada and j crew.jpg
Intern Anna is on holiday, but she sent us a miffed text today from her Pucci beach towel.

“These J. Crew flats for $148 seem very much inspired by these Prada shoes from Bergdorf Goodman, for $390.

Is this a possible adventure in copyrights?”

The interesting thing is that those Prada shoes are a hard sell, and the woman who’d wear them is either so sophisticated that she could slip those on for wit, so kooky that she sprawls on her studio floor in them and paints, or quite young and feeding off of her mother’s credit card.

How J. Crew could think any of those customers translates into their own seems to be the real issue.

And why they added the weird orange scalloping around the sides is another.

Come on guys. Really?

Actually, Nine West produced almost exact reproductions of the Prada flats.

If you go to www.ninewest.com and click on flats its actually the headlining picture as of right now. They come in a few color schemes; and yes, one of them is fuschia and orange.

Actually, if not for the price tag, I would wear those flats in a hot second. I think they're adorable!

I have to say - the J. Crew flats are much cuter than the Prada ones... and while they may be 'inspired' I wouldn't call them a copy.

Actually, I think J.Crew has had a version of these flats for a few seasons - so could it be trickle up effect to Prada?

Nine West has produced amazing knock offs this season - of Louboutin, Chanel, and others. Really - how can you buy the $690 fishnet Loubous when they are available for $110 at Nine West.

What's debatable is what supports the price for the Loubous? I'm starting to think that there is a major quality difference. I have a pair, and have NEVER gotten a blister- where as cheaper shoes tend to rip up my feet.

Thoughts?

I agree with courtneyk. The J. Crew ones just work better. The more streamlined shape and little keyhole add a bit of sophistication and sexiness that balances out the clown colors. The Prada shoes look like something for a little girl or an eccentric old lady.

@ H:

Absolutely! You see the quality difference in shoes in a way that you don't with other items. Even if a zipper on a cheap dress is put in badly or a hem isn't sewn well, it doesn't actually hurt you, whereas with shoes you can feel the difference immediately! Ever notice how you can put on a pair of 100mm Louboutins and waltz around like a movie star, but if you tried a pair of 4 inch heels from Nine West you feel it hurt immediately/you look like a stripper? It's all about construction with shoes, and that's worth paying for.

I agree ~ the J. Crew version is adorable, much easier to wear and are younger than the Prada pair (that look like something an octogenarian would wear). The price on the other hand is a lot...J. Crew's prices have been skyrocketing in recent years, and this is a perfect example. I'm all for paying up for quality, comfort, and longevity, but sadly, J. Crew doesn't usually live up to all those standards.

I completely thought the J Crew's were from Prada.

The real Prada's just look like sexed-up Delmans to me. The J Crew version seems much younger and fresher.

Hey - I don't think J. Crew copied Prada at all - except for the colors...

LOVE the Prada's though - much fancier!

These resemble one another in color only. Hardly an adventure in copyright.
