Are Skulls Still Okay?

skulls.jpgLibertine for Target hit the web yesterday, and with it came the realization that skulls are still here.

There were the original high fashion skeletons from Galliano and Lucien Pellat-Finet.

There were the McQueen scarves co-opted by Urban Outfitters and still worn everywhere (this weekend I reasoned I couldn’t throw mine away, so instead I used it as a beach blouse).

And then there came the inevitable Sunday Styles story, the Damien Hirst diamond sculpture, the plates from Thomas Paul, the Cheap Monday pop-up store, and everything from Insight.

But despite complaints, scoffs, and annoying bedazzled skulls worn on annoying bejeweled MTV stars, the trend still hasn’t gone - in fact, it’s still going.

The kicker: It’s the fad about death that’s refusing to die.

many Target stores had the line already stocked by Friday night. I took a look on Saturday and I'm sad to say the shiz looked CHEAP and all in all was a big fat yawn. There were a few cute pieces, but nothing to write home about. My fave will always be Luella!

They were cute while they lasted and yes I did buy in to the trend, but now it is time for something fresher, I don't have any suggestions!!

I was thinking about this exact thing when I saw all the Libertine items at Target.com -- you read my mind Fashionista!

My favorite has been Proenza and Luella, and when I went to target last night the Libertine stuff DID look kinda cheap. Also, I thought the skulls were just ALRIGHT when the first appeared, and I hope this trend does die soon!

I've never understood the skull thing. Some of the scarves are kind of cute, but that tank really takes it too far - let it die, already!

I didn't like much either. I purchased the silk lace cropped shawl-thing though. I wore it yesterday to work and got A LOT of compliments! One lady said she was going to go out and buy it for her bridesmaid's dresses.

The fact that the Lbertine designers claimed they "invented" the skull as fashion trend makes me want to barf.

Guess they neglected to remember anything from the 1980's, or something called "punk".

Hmm. As someone who is a history major, skulls as an symbol have been around for thousands of years. Yes, they became trendy, but it's a powerful image to "write off."

No, no, no. Skulls even warrant talking about anymore?
They're such a bad hangover from a trend a few years ago. I think this'll be haunting us longer than tights...
that said, I have one shirt with a skull on it that I'll still wear, but it's like a day-of-the-dead skull. It works, I promise.

if skulls are going to be worn they certainly shouldn't be worn on something like THAT
