Late Bloomers, Or: Alison Thinks These Are a Good Idea, Too

In case metallic hot pants aren’t exactly your thing, we have another, more innocent idea, for layering under short dresses – bloomers!
Besides being a really cute word, bloomers – like these ones from Swedish designer Ylva Liljefors – will keep you covered for bike rides, trampolines, and any other activity that might make skirt- or dress-wearing hazardous.
Plus – the cute gingham pattern and the ruffles look so cute peeking out, it’s almost tempting to just wear them as shorts.

When I was on my high school dance team, we had to wear ruffle-trimmed spanky pants (akin to bloomers) underneath the dresses we wore for football games. V. cute. The year after I quit, they switched to flashy lame spanky pants like the ones that Allison posted earlier. Not as cute, but def. as much fun.

I just had hoped that we might have, you know, moved a bit beyond that by now. Amelia’s bloomers, by the way, were not short underpants, either. And just because we choose things ourselves, doesn’t mean there isn’t some other undercurrent at work here. The whole babydoll aesthetic is infantilizing to some degree, whether it’s “foisted” or chosen. Just sayin’ it’s something that seems really prevalent lately. No doubt will swing back somewhat to a more “grown up” look in the fall, as it usually does. Heck, it’s so darn hot right now lolling around in bloomers and cami does sound tempting.

I saw frilled lace tennis panties at Paragon a few years ago and am kicking myself for not buying them to wear on and off the court. Any suggestions on where to find some?

damn, just go to A.A. and get those tight bike shorts. better yet, dance stores have tons of bloomers and bottoms that are way cheaper.
