Late Bloomers, Or: Alison Thinks These Are a Good Idea, Too
By Faran Krentcil
In case metallic hot pants aren’t exactly your thing, we have another, more innocent idea, for layering under short dresses – bloomers!
Besides being a really cute word, bloomers – like these ones from Swedish designer Ylva Liljefors – will keep you covered for bike rides, trampolines, and any other activity that might make skirt- or dress-wearing hazardous.
Plus – the cute gingham pattern and the ruffles look so cute peeking out, it’s almost tempting to just wear them as shorts.
You can find them online, for about $80 – at www.branten.com – one of the best websites for hard-to-find Scandinavian designers, and also endearingly offering free shipping worldwide.

Diaper chic.
Instead of bloomers, what about wearing a longer dress that doesn’t show your stuff.

Wow, the infantilization of the American woman is now complete. Just lie back and let Daddy take care of you, kitten….

You could just grab a sewing machine and make a pair, it’d take about 20 minutes.
It reminds me of 50′s swimsuit bottoms.

“Thank Heaven,” America isn’t foisting these bloomers onto women. Girls are noticing them of their own accord. It’s a little too easy to blame this on other people, but much more interesting and exciting to look at them as a chosen phenomenon (and a small one, still).

actually, thankheavenforlittlegirls, bloomers have their roots in feminism. they were considered scandalous when first introduced in the 1850s as a form of practical dress for activities like bicycle riding, just like alison suggested. amelia bloomer adopted them as a protest of restrictive women’s dress, and wore them until the crinoline was introduced.
just like in the case of the original bloomers, these shorts let women do things they couldn’t normally do in a dress. i, for one, am all for them. i also think they’re adorable.

Buttress & Snatch have been doing cute frilly knickers for years, that are about 1000x sexier than those ghastly things. Go to their website, to the lingerie catalogue, then look at the bottom pair. They bring those out in different cotton patterns every season and they are FAB.
NB: Not baggy like bloomers. My arse/thighs just don’t need the baggy.
NBx2: Bloomer thing was about 5 years ago when Helena Bonham Carter started a company making bloomers. Keep up.

London Girl, those Buttress & Snatch undies are way cute! This may be a little slutty (whatevs) but I’ve always opted for boy short undies when I’m biking in a particularly short skirt. I would *rock* these happily!

Oh, look! And I can buy them here in the ole US of A!
