Fergie may love Seven Jeans and True Religion, but soon she’ll name drop the Candie’s brand into her songs - for almost $4 million.
The Times UK reports the singer has accepted an offer from the teenybopper company to integrate their products into her songs.
The move is a first in commercial music, although hip hop artists have been name dropping their favorite brands into songs for years - and though it was never overtly sponsored, it did help the singers get discounts at their favorite stores (I remember during Fashion Week two seasons ago, Missy Elliott actually told me so).
If the plan is successful, you can expect other artists to follow suit - especially since music sales keep declining. But will we still love Gwen Stefani if she’s singing about Le Sportsac?
And will there be anything left in popular culture that isn’t, essentially, a commercial?

A few years ago, a consulting firm decided to track the brands that were being mentioned in Top 40 radio over two years, and the results were pretty interesting: http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/content/aug2005/id20050823_083548.htm?chan=db
