Pale House Rock

lily paler.jpg
Reader Joanna writes in with a common summer pesk:

People look at her luminous skin and say, “Eeew, you’re so pale.”

If you find yourself in the same situation, there are two options:

You can either throw your iced tea on the person’s face, or figure out how to make your glow-in-the-dark skin tone work for summer.

Let’s look at our favorite phosphoresce girl, Lily Cole, for inspiration.

There’s no reason to self-tan or - eek - lay out in the sun, but you could switch your brush to a bronzer, which catches light nicely and makes your cheeks glisten. We like the ones from the Body Shop because they’re cheap, organic, and the powder is very loose, so it applies easier.

You can also add a little bit of lip stain, because it goes from day-to-night and makes you look like you’re either eating berries or drinking wine. Either one is cute. Our favorite lip stain ever is from Tarte Cosmetics; it’s $21 but one of the only makeup items we carry in our pochette every day.

As for eyes, you have two options:

Wear brown mascara to lessen the contrast between your light skin and your darker eyes…

Or rock your glow, like Lily, and find an electric blue or purple eyeliner and shadow to make your skin pop.

Obviously, sunscreen is more important than all of this stuff, but a few good streaks of shimmer should curb any Interview with a Vampire references through August…

Personally, I don't think self tanner or bronzer works for my pale skin. When people comment about my pale-ness, I simply tell them that I don't tan well and don't plan on torturing my skin in the sun.
I've tried every bronzer, and it just isn't natural. I stick to Tarte's cheek stain in Tickled or Tipsy to keep me from looking like a vampire.
And Chanel's eyeliner in purple is gorgeous on pale gal's with brown eyes.......

I agree, bronzer just looks dirty on my pale skin.

The only solution is to just rock the paleness by wearing saturated colors and feel good knowing you won't look like a raisin when you're fifty.

Well, the other option is to the lose the rude friends.

Really. Pale skin isn't a problem to be solved, any more than black or latina or asian coloring is a problem.

i think bronzer is usually a bad idea if you have pink rather than yellow undertones.

one of the things i like about nyc (rather than LA) is you are not expected to paint yourself be orange.

I'm very very pale, green eyes and very dark hair. Bronzers do not work with my skin, of course i would want a bit of that sun kissed glow, but I won't certainly get it from a bottle, and since I do not tan like normal people, i resigned myself to to looking like vampire, well at least a colourful one.

Anonymous: I have the same coloring (pale, green eyes, dark hair). I've just chosen to accept it and rock it! I'm from British stock, my people don't tan!

That being said, I wish there was a better option for legs that didn't involve tights or artificial bronzers. They will forever looks pasty. . .sigh

I use Nars body glow, it gives a subtle sheen and moisturizes like crazy. It's kinda oily so I only use it on my legs......but it helps!

I JUST discovered a bronzerish thing that makes me look like I have SOME color-- but not dirtydace. I tend to look strung out if I'm too pale or just plain ruddy if I've attempted a pink flush, but Laura Mercier filtered brown face tint works really well.

I always want to end up looking "sunkissed" but it never really works much. I end up lookinglike a hobo who slapped on dry mud to my face whenever I attempt bronzers. This time around I bought myself some Jergens Natural in Fair. I'm hoping it won't make me look like shake & bake or a cheeto. Sadly I wish the brasilian in me would perk up in the sun but instead I go from whiter than milk to lobster in less than 15 minutes.

I have very pale pinkish skin (thanks Mom!), but unfortunately don't have the same luminous complexion as Nicole, Lily, et al. However, I've found that Mary Kay's new bronzer (don't remember the name, but it's three shades you swirl together) is VERY sheer, so it actually looks very natural. Even better, it's easy to build (and still looks soft and pretty) so it looks great when I remember to use my Jergens gradual tan :)

It's unfortunate that people feel the need to follow such an unhealthy aesthetic as tanning, whether it's real or fake. The Times actually published an article a while back that suggested fake tans were just as dangerous as real tans:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/03/fashion/03skin.html?ex=1336017600&en=56ebb29f34a927ce&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

The bottom line is that women should be free to like their skin color as is without Hollywood telling you that you should try to appear like you've mated with a bag of Cheetos.

Maybe if we all stopped fretting about our pale legs we could start paying attention to problems that actually matter -- like the fact that women still make 75-cents on the dollar when compared to men or the that only 16.3% of Congress is female.

I'm a big fan of NARS blush in Amore for this time of year. It makes me look like I've gotten a touch of color but still looks natural.

Haha, Lily. It's not so much the rude friends as much as it is random people yelling at me any time I dare to wear something other than pants in the summer.

I don't really tan at all, so I've chosen to rock the paleness in bright colors. But when I do want color, I like the Boots Natural Glow or whatever from Target, which makes me look like I got sun but doesn't make me orange.

And I hate bronzer. I have horrible flashbacks to my mother making me wear it and seeing it smudged off on the telephone.

Bronzer looks horrendous pale skin. You're never going to match with the rest of yourself.

Try the Bobbi Brown loose powder in white. Yes, it's really WHITE but not gothy, it's gorgeous.

I've had my own bought with skin cancer two years ago a the ripe old age of 26. The perils of being nordic blooded in the South. (My dad's cherokee is no where to be found.)

That being said, I still occasionally get some sun, more of as a preventative than anything. No more than 10-15 minutes at a time, per day. My particular kind was brought on by not being out in the sun at all, then going to the beach and getting fried 3-4 times a year. (Down here you can get burned from late Feb-late Nov.)

ANYWAY, I'm more concerned these days with keeping a nice, even skin tone than trying to achieve some actual color. Everything seems to look fake on me, unfortunately.

I just rock the pale. I read somewhere that encouraging the "bronzed" look just makes people more likely to tan, which as we all know is bad for you. Why can't we all just accept the skin color we were born with?

A lovely pale girl I know has an aqua tee shirt that says, in big white letters, PALE IS THE NEW TAN. It's from a few years ago, but still, so good.

Those who haven't fried themselves will have the last laugh when all the tanorexics look like baseball gloves.

I am a pale girl, too, with honey blonde hair and blue-gray eyes (white Russian heritage.) I assiduously avoid the sun, haven't tanned since my late teens, back then because I would burn and peel and it looked awful. I never go out without at least 30 spf and often wear hats. I had to go to a plastic surgeon not long ago for some work on my hand, and he looked my face over and said, "You won't need to have anything done for another 10-15 years." He sounded very sad.

When I want to be tan for a day or so I just invest in a mystic tan. At 25$ a session, its not a bad spend to look awesome in white or out on the beach for a day. It really is fool proof too. If you follow the directions it looks amazing. I have red hair, freckles, the whole shebang so I used it all the time in the summer. It doesn't make you as tan as some girls but it gives you a good color without being orangey.
