The Belle Word

hi marci - hi helen - what's the story, morning glory - what's the word hummingbird.jpg
Quick:

Name one film starring Camilla Belle, aside from the vaguely successful and entirely forgettable horror flick When A Stranger Calls.

Next, count how many of your old fashion magazines have the B-list actress on their cover. You’ll find, as we have, that her fashion press completely overshadows her IMDB cred.

While the fashion world has certainly adopted out of work actresses before (Olsens, anyone?), they usually do it as a nod to the girl’s personal style.

The difference with Ms. Belle is she doesn’t get tabloid coverage, so the only times we see her “style is when she’s actually been dressed by a professional.

Although she looks great in clothes picked out for her, we don’t know what Camilla’s personality or everyday style are like.

If fashion magazines use actresses as their cover girls in order to convey a certain personality trait, what exactly are Camilla’s covers saying to consumers?

Perhaps that she frequents Rose Bar fashion parties, and has a few friends on the masthead of Teen Vogue?

What exactly is the problem here? She is classically beautiful and looks stunning at every event I've seen her at. She was my absolute BEST DRESSED at the Costume Institute Gala in that stunning Jean Paul Gaultier couture gown and she certainly know how to wear clothes, whether they are selected for her by a stylist or not.

Almost every celeb on the face of this earth - upstart or well-established - is dressed by a stylist anyway, so I'm not seeing why Camilla has been singled out here.

she looks drop-dead on red carpets but agreed do not get the editorial obsession with her. my guess is AW is a fan so she is continually given coverage in teen vogue (she IS the most elegant teen you see photographed)- same with maria sharapova- and that led other magazines to do things on her, and so on.

not sure why she was at the espy awards last night but omgggg that gucci!!

I should be more ashamed than I am at how many times I've seen her in this AWFUL "Secret Garden" sequel that I think Hallmark put together. She's an orphan from Brooklyn? Who gets sent TO England during WW2? It's random and indulgent.

Anyway, I think she's really pretty and looks great the way she's styled.

Or, does her sudden explosion onto the fashion scene have something to do with her uncanny resemblance to Bee Schaffer? Perhaps her inexplicable popularity is all due to so some subliminal AW brown-nosing??

why do YOU even care? You obviously notice her frequently if your posting this NOW, as opposed to 6months ago when she was sprawled across even magazine. She has a unique look; what are models famous for? not eating and getting the photographs taken? Almost everyone is styled. And she is not in the tabloids because she has never been arrested, or caught doing coke binges. Nor does she have a fake plastic rack or nine million babies. LAY OFF HER

There's an awful lot of ire in some of these responses! Camilla Belle may be gorgeous and classy, but so are tons of girls walking down the street in NYC every day. So why don't we let them borrow couture for the Met Ball, or splash them all over magazine covers, or give them major perfume campaigns? There are actresses out there who have been around much longer and who have done much more work, and they don't garner nearly the amount of attention that Camilla seems to effortlessly command from the fashion world. I was so baffled at one point by her fame that I imdb'd her to see if there was something I was missing--was she in some big blockbuster or Disney Channel series that I just didn't pay attention to? Were her parents rich and/or in the entertainment industry? None of the above, as far as I could tell.

This reminds me of those Fame Audits that Fametracker used to do back in the day. I mean, Camilla's co-star in The Quiet, Elisha Cuthbert, is way more famous and recognizable than Camilla and arguably just as pretty. Where's her free couture?

*Let it be known that I have nothing against Camilla Belle, and would give my right arm to look like her--which, according to www.myheritage.com, I do :)

I think that when she was listed in the "best dressed" issue of Vogue this past January, a claim was made that all of the entrants (at least the modern ones and not those featured in the flashback photos) did not employ personal stylists. This, of course, could have been totally true at the time and now she does work with stylists, but I did want to point that out.

Aside from The Ballad of Jack & Rose, she's done very little remarkable work, and I guess that her appeal is that she's a little exotic and not tabloid-bait, but otherwise, I'm drawing a blank.

When a stranger calls is her biggest mainstream movie.. but she's been in some smaller films. She chooses interesting roles, i have seen her in the films mentioned by others. She's a hollywood poster child for fresh young actresses who aren't f-ed up. I like seeing her in photos, i pay more attention to her (no fingerless gloves or endless photos of raybans here). i find her unique and interesting. Thank god for a girl with out bright dyed fake hair, weirdo boyfriends, random engagements for publicity, jailtime, drug problems and i could go on and on. I wish most of young hollywood would disappear. I can't stand to see anymore photos of lindsey lohan on a rehab break, or Nicole Riche walking into a shopping store, why am i supposed to care? Camilla is famous for all the right reasons, and hopefully she'll stay on this path.

while it's true that Miss Belle is best known as an actress of questionable talent (and little else, other than now fashion muse), it's just this lack of persona that makes her the perfect clothes rack, no?
no DUIs, no bad extensions, no tangerine tans to contend with.
I think it's just this personality void that adds to her mystique, particularly for couture designers....

Well she's very pretty, that's for sure. she's more of a model really, at this point. Lots of actors, etc., work as spokespeople and models for lots of designers. Camilla's career in fashion has been infinitely more successful than her acting career. so what? Maybe her management steered her to more fashion-related work, maybe she caught the eye of an influential designer or fashion person early on and everything snowballed from there. Maybe she has the "right" connections and whatnot. The average drop dead gorgeous girl walking in the streets of NY does not have an agent and is not an actress or a model and lacks the connections and exposure to fashion and "show business" that Camilla, et. al., obviously have. It's a bit disingenious to compare a professional actress/model to "the average girl down the street". As we all know fashion is always subjective, and not very democratic. Are the top supermodles now, Daria, Gemma, etc, truly the most beautiful girls in the world? And who gets to decide what "the most beautiful" means? Camilla's career can even be compared to lots of socialites and their ilk, they show up at events, get dresses loaned to them, maybe even get to become fashion icons. So what if Camilla's acting career isnt' the most successful around? I bet successful award-winning actresses, like Halle Berry and Hilary Swank for example, get a lot of flack for their fashion work too.

Yeah, but if Daria or Gemma are on the cover of the magazine, do you automatically assume that there is going to be an accompanying feature story or article on them inside?

I think there's an idea among actors and actresses--which has probably transferred to the rest of us--that you've got to kind of pay your dues artistically before you get the kind of attention Camilla gets. Remember when Gretchen Mol was labeled an "It Girl" for all the world to see on Vanity Fair, despite having a pretty comparatively unremarkable resume? This is kind of like that. Teen Vogue is no Vanity Fair, but "A Star is Born"--really?

It's interesting that she hasn't parlayed this exposure into more film roles, however. She seems to have an excellent publicist, but if she wants a bigger film career, girl better get a better agent!

I think this girl is so gorgeous. I think most people have a tendency, when confronted with a beautiful woman, to notice her flaws as a way to make them feel better about themselves. I know I do it sometimes, although only internally. But damn, I can't find anything wrong with her, I covet those brows.
