Why Don’t You All Just Shade Away?

we forgot to eat breakfast and now were sad.jpg
After our debate a couple of weeks ago about the pros and cons of designer shades (affordable luxury or just another way to lose $300) – we came across a pair of handmade, ostrich and alligator skin sunglasses.

They’re from Moss Lipow, the sunglass company that’s so exclusive and important, it doesn’t even have a working website.

Although we aren’t that into “exotic leather (ostriches are cute!), the glasses look cool, and definitely stand out from this summer’s ubiquitous Wayfarers.

But the price?

A mere $3,800!

Definitely not something you want to leave on the beach.

On the other hand, those $1,000 Louis Vuitton shades are starting to look like a bargain.

curses! After reading the disposable vs. designer sunglasses post, what suddenly disappeared? Yes, my favorite Marc Jacobs shades (bought with the justification in mind that "if I spend lots of money on sunglasses, I'll treat them better and remember not to sit on them and crack them!").
The $5 sidewalk-vendor sunglasses, however, are doing just fine. I hate you, karma.

Ostriches are domesticated (kind of they use high fences) and grown for food in many countries. Driving in South Africa you pass hundreds of Ostrich farms. The skin is harvested just like the meat so if you arn't upset buying cow leather goods you really shouldn't be concerned with Ostrich leather stuff. Although $3,800 for Sunglasses is a little OTT.

Moss Lipow is a character who designs interesting pieces out of his apartment. He sure is a little nutty and most fashion folk are certainly as well. Most creative people seem to be a little twisted.

If we didn't have twisted, crazy people...we would have no fashion.

I have a rule: under seven or over 100.

It's like any other jewelry... you take care of the expensive ones and let those little buggers for 1.25 from old navy get cracked, broken and thrown out after one season.
