Adventures in Copyrights: Oops, They Did It Again

Steve + Barry’s wants to assure you that no designers were harmed in the making of their Bitten collection -

In other words, they sent us a very firm email declaring the Anna Corinna ripoff bag that caused such a fuss was never, ever made.

We don’t shop at Steve + Barry’s (sorry!), so we can’t confirm seeing the bag or not seeing the bag (as you readers have). But we do think it’s awfully funny that even after insisting the bag never made it past production, it still appeared in not one, but two press previews of the line.

Still, we appreciate the S+B awareness of the issue, and we even made a special graphic (below) for Bitten’s second collection.

It admits that some of their new pieces are darling, and now the only issue is the tag line “Fashion Should Not Cost More Than Your Groceries.”

Well, our groceries definitely don’t cost as much as our clothes… maybe we’re just not eating enough?

I'm almost positive I saw the first bag in stores. If I remember correctly I went looking for it and was not impressed by it.

Why shouldn't I spend more money on clothes than on food. I try to spend my money on clothes that will actually last a few seasons and many washings and plan to keep many pieces for several years. On the other hand, food lasts until you eat it or until you throw it out. That's such stupid marketing.

I've seen a gajillion girls in New York with the Anna Corinna version. Never seen anyone with the Bitten version. Regardless, the style is tired.

the anna and corinna bag has been copied by so many different labels/designers, is it even an issue anymore? I'll try to post some links to other dupes...

Anais, we were ALL ready to move on, until Steve & Barry called WWD and insisted they never made that bag...

Hopefully this will be the last post. I believe there are way cuter totes out there, too.

There was an episode of sex and the city in which Carrie said that when she was starting out she would sometimes go without food so she could buy vogue. I liked Carrie so much more than SJP...

Speaking of Anna Corinna, there is a bag very similar to the Anna Corinna bender bag on the anthropologie website for a whopping $428.00 interestingly coined the squeezebox satchel. Check it out, seems a little bold of anthropologie.
