Fantasia: Scary Movie, Scary Style?

lipsticker.jpg
Anyone interested in the fashion world is surely accustomed to its affinity for all things outrageous.

Whether it’s an outlandish editorial or ad campaign, no one can say the fashion world is lacking in interesting invention.

Fantasy has always been a part of fashion. Often, it trickles down to magazines from runway shows where designers and stylists come up with the most creative looks they can muster. (John Galliano, anyone?)

But what happens when the realm of fantasy hits the magazines? We’re thinking of Dazed and Confused with their line of “lipstick people,” or the time British Vogue put Coco Rocha in a hot air balloon. American magazines are just as nuts: Remember the recent V spread of women’s body parts emerging from shoes?

It’s a great display of the magazine’s creative energy, but those readers who are not innately fashionable must falter when spreads that are supposed to help them get dressed churn out costumes and set pieces instead.

So, what do you think: fantasy fashion, friend or foe?

If you want stright up fashion you buy Lucky, Glamour or InStyle. The people that buy magazines like V and Dazed among others, are more interested in being wowed and titillated.

i stopped subscribing to W because it was fantasy-driven. i was amazed by the creativity of the spreads but at some point i need to see practicality of use, especially if i only subscribe to one or two fashion mags a year.

Fashion needs fantasy in order to make it art! Without fantasy, it's just commerce.

I agree with Lala. I'm taking a fashion styling class right now and it has really made me appreciate even more the more avant garde shoots that are put in mags and ads. Without those types of shoots everyone would be wearing the same outfits that are shown in Lucky and Glamour. Fantasy-driven fashion makes people get more creatively inspired.
