Have Celebs Deserted Fashion Week?

1.jpg
Memo to celebrity publicists:

If you have a cute client who needs a little push, RSVP her to a fashion show.

We’ve been hearing from PR Blackberries around the city that so far, there are way less celeb confirmations than in the past - in part because MTV’s Video Music Awards happen at the exact same time, in Las Vegas, “and we’ve lost so many regulars because of it,” confided one fashion publicist.

Of course a few famous faces will show for the shows, but this trickle could be a continuation of last year, when Mary Kate’s arrival at Jenni Kayne was received like the gift of the Magi. Just look at New York’s backstage photos to see the star drought.

But why have celebs stopped mobbing the runways?

In part, because they’re scared of the press mobbing them. Fashion shows are notoriously open season, with the understanding that if a famous person comes to a catwalk, they want the exposure - and the constant paparazzi.

We’ll never forget the arrival of Paris Hilton at Nanette Lepore last year - the panic was like the apocalypse. And at Zaldy’s show, when we had the bizarre experience of sitting next to Hilary Duff (who was awesome, we should admit), we had to wear our sunglasses because of all the flashes.

We suspect the other reason celebs fear fashion week is this story from The New York Times. Called “Look at Me, Look at Me, Please Look at Me,” it mocks Mischa Barton’s front row occupation during Spring ‘07 showings.

By Fall ‘07, Mischa didn’t appear at all, and celebrities who did deigned to make multiple shows got called out on their needy flashbulb habits.

Note the sneer we heard from two fashion insiders this weekend, when each remarked separately, “At least Debra Messing will be there.”

And maybe Evan Rachel Wood, too, since she has 3 movies premiering…

And maybe with the celebs' attention overshadowing the collections, the fashion houses aren't as much into paying them to come sit in the front row?

But would it really be a disaster if they didn't show? Maybe fashion is no longer in fashion for the celebutards?

Granted, it would mean far fewer sound bytes and front-row shots, but really ... I consider it a step in the right direction.

Well at least Mary Kate is actually friends with the Kayne sisters, she didn't go to the show to get her photo taken.

Please, please let it be true! I was almost killed by a paparazzi tsunami for Tori Spelling at Heatherette (this was 2 or 3 years ago before her return to TV with that fantastic show so noTORIous.)

Please if I were famous and therefore had free access to the front row of any fashion show I'd say f you to the press who were mocking me and make sure I attended every show possible. Why does it have to be about exposure? Why can't it be a geniune love of fashion?

I miss going to shows in the early-to-mid 90s. Everyone was only interested in the clothes. We did not care about celebrities--probably because they were few and far between. The "celebrities" that I got excited about seeing were Polly Mellen, Isabella Blow, Andre Leon Talley and even Lauren Azersky. I did the whole Paris and Nicky thing in 2001 when I sat behind them at Ilona Rich's show. There was no frenzy over them back then, no paparazzi tsunami.

While I know some celebs do enjoy fashion, I'm tempted to say that FW for many seems to be just another trendy place to be seen at. Almost like a new club or bar or 'unknown' vacation spot.

I sat behind Beyonce at two shows two years ago and it was INSANE. I will not miss that.

i agree with Kara, i too would go and thumb my nose at the haters; besides with so many of them starting their own "fashion" lines, they have to go to the shows. where else are they going to get ideas from, their own creativity and orignality....i think not!

Not that they'll really be missed but why would anyone choose to go to the VMA's instead of fashion week!?

No kidding-- anyone who would choose Vegas and/or the VMAs over FW -- good riddance to them. More room for the real fashionistas!

Is the MAGIC clothing convention in vegas always right before NY fashion week?
