Julia Restoin Roitfeld Loves Jeans, Wants to Make Makeup

If you dig Julia like we dig Julia - and we know you do - then you were psyched to see her new ad campaign debut this month in Purple Magazine:

She’s the new face of Restoration of the Monarchy, a jean line by fashion furniture guru Eric Villency, with ads shot by Hugo Tillman.

The clothes were named to spoof the low-class roots of denim, and range from pants and skirts to vests and shredded t-shirts, which Julia dutifully dons in a photo spread for the brand.

In honor of her latest gig, we quizzed the graphic designer (she was via Blackberry; we were on Sidekick) about her denim habits… and her future as a fashion legacy….

How were things on the photo set? The art directors and stylist gave me a lot of freedom when choosing the looks, trusting my personal judgment on what looks the best on me.

Do you have any favorite pieces from the line?
Definitely the sailor buttons jeans and the mini jumpsuit.

Does your work in graphic design help you as a model?
As an art director myself, maybe its easier for me to get what the art director wants when i model?

Maybe! Is there a difference in the way American girls wear denim and the way French girls wear denim? I feel American girls wear jeans in a very casual (comfortable way). But if wearing jeans, I will always add a dress up touch… Or heels, or jewelry… Mainly heels!

When is it not okay to wear a pair of jeans? I think its always “ok” to wear a pair of jeans….
There are so many ways to wear jeans…. there’s definitely a way for every occasions. I personally wear mini denim shorts all the time, summer…winter…beach…city…and office, with tights and a suit jacket.

Would you ever want your own clothing line, or are you sticking to 2 dimensional design? Why not? I definitely don’t want to just stick to 2D design. I love package design; I would really love one day to design a line of make up for a big company. I would love create a small line of the few make up products i would wear, choosing the color scheme, the packaging, the advertising? I would also love to design clothing one day..who knows…

Are you working on anything for Fashion Week?
So far, I designed Peter Som’s show invite.

Ooh, we’re looking at it right now. Thanks Julia!
JULIA: Sent from my Blackberry.

Did she just graduate college this past May? I thought we were the same age. And yet she has a full time job and a part time job and is clearly awesome. I'm just floundering. But still, she's awesome. I'll try not to be too jealous.

Oh Kara, don't stress - Julia went to school in her hometown of Paris and THEN came here to get an American degree from Parsons.

She's certainly a bright young thing, but she's also 26, and she's been working on her design skills for a very long time!

The name made me laugh (in a positive way) when I read it because all the "low" denim names right now seem too ironic on their clearly well-endowed wearers. Why not say it how it really is?

I am surprised to see Eric Villency and monarchy uttered in the same breath.
