This reminds me of an episode of the tv series 'Felicity' where one of the the characters get a spandex-y tube thing from her boyfriend and cannot figure out what it is for... is it a top? is it a skirt? In the end it was actually a large headband (which she found out after she arrived for a date wearing it as a tight mini skirt)

-purses w/ detachable straps may be wrapped around the waist twice and voila: fanny pack! (I have a tiny vintage gucci this works great with and it saved me from buying an actual gucci fanny pack)
-old soft boyfriend t-shirts make great dresses when paired with a belt and tights.
-If you take two mens shirts, lay them flat and attach them by buttoning one to the other, then tuck in two of the four combined sleeves, and add a belt, it makes a really cute mini-dress (I admittedly stole that from a really old nylon DIY)

• Various riding bridle leathers as bracelets and belts, depending on the length.
• I've also used an actual riding bit (full cheek snaffle) as a belt buckle, with a nice braided set of reins wrapped loosely around my waist two times as a belt.
Not exactly a mistaken identity case, as it's not really fashion to begin with ... But I couldn't not share. Especially with all of the equestrian-themed pieces out there right now.

Joyce, you're so right! Grey Gardens was such a fashion show.

Cardigans as button up skirts with big faux-pockets.
