Streetwalker: The Book Look

emelyn.JPG
Emelyn, 23, art historian

Got Her: At an art opening in Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin.

Stalked Her: Because she was wearing vintage YSL and looked casual and comfortable, and we were jealous of her hair.

Shot Her: To show how to put together an attention-getting ensemble without showing skin, and how to wear 1970s vintage pieces without touching polyester or getting near any garish fluorescent floral prints…

She Says: My fashion inspiration is Yves Saint Laurent’s Ballet Russes collection. My skirt and top are Miu Miu, my jacket is vintage Yves Saint Laurent, and my boot are vintage Hermès.

We Say: Independent study, independent style.

—ALISON COOL

so much potential in each piece! but this girl looks frumpy - the outfit ages her about 40 years. and the hair could be cute... if worn with a more "clean" look. skirt, shirt, jacket, boots (especially the boots), hair - all very pretty and original ... but all together its just awkward and disheveled.

I agree, Olya.

I don't see it but each piece is fabulous, just not together.

This is the coolest one you've done. This is what real fashion looks like, people ! It's not just about the cute girls in cute dresses!

She went to Columbia. She used to always have her fingers smudged with newspaper print from reading all day.

...So fashion is also about the awkward girls in fugly outfits?

While I appreciate that fashion is about different points of view...the view from here ain't pretty.

Understanding clothes, designers, and vintage are are all pluses, but if the end result isn't flattering to her complexion, face, or figure...than who really cares if its YSL?

yes Olya
a scrubby clean, glossy ponytail would have done it for her.

That's a great call, actually - if she'd done the ponytail, the outfit would look completely different!

while I'm not too fond of the outfit, i think it's great that you're featuring people from berlin. as a born & bred "prenzlauer bergian" i love to see some people from my neighborhood on fashionista!

I love the way she looks but you know saying you're an art historian when you're 23 is just ridiculous. A bachelor's does not make it so.

I AGREE WITH RANDY. seriously, i think this is so stylish. those vintage YSL jackets are the most incredible pieces of vintage out there!

i agree, a BA from columbia doesn't make you an art historian, even if your trust fund enables you to wander around berlin gawking at art galleries. also she usually looked like a trash bag wandering around campus...

Leefi
She's not from Berlin. She lives in New York and last I heard, she is a fact checker for ArtForum.

once you are a PhD candidate, you are on a course of research, and this is what art histroians do their whole careers--the fact that this girl's personal background has made it in to these comments is just realy shocking to me. some of these comments are much snobbier than this lady has been made out to be, not to mention close-minded!--how people who dont work in fashion do you all know with a wardrobe as impressive as this?
