The Gap Brings Their Euro Collection

gp520448-00vliv01.jpg
You asked and now it’s happened:

The Gap gets in select clothes from their European stores this week, which you can buy online at Gap.com.

The line was designed with Marie Amelie-Sauve, the Vogue Paris stylist who’s also a Balenciaga muse. And yes, they’re very cool.

Keep in mind that most of the garments cost a little more than normal Gap stuff - the $350 leather bomber is so cool, but hardly traditional for the brand - and the sizes run a tiny bit smaller because they’re built for the European market.

Also, there are no Gap johdpurs, but the slinky knits seen on Coco Rocha are definitely in stock.

Good job, Gap!

Hi Faran. Thanks for the tip. Do you know if the pieces are still in the stores in Europe? I'm going next week and would love to see things in person.

It's their fall collection, so it'll be at Gap Europe for a loooong time.

Actually, the economics of this are wrong. They should only cost more if they are actually made in Europe. If they are made in China, or south Asia, like much of what the Gap sells, then all the Gap has to do is ship them here instead of Europe (it being a multi-national company and all.)

So we're actually paying more for skimpier clothes that might be made in the same factories as the Gap clothes we buy in American stores, because they're meant for a different market, but not actually produced there. Genius.

No Brenda, I think the price discrepancy is because Gap Europe's clothes are a little bit more like Club Monaco - the materials are generally more expensive than American Gap.

That sweater dress at left is a cotton-cashmere blend; in America it would probably be cotton-silk or poly. And leather jackets don't generally sneak into Gap collections, though I do have a deep red leather blazer that I bought at Gap in 1999...

Also, have you ever felt a t-shirt from Gap London? It's just better - it feels better, it's stronger... the cost is higher but you can actually tell.

Wow Faran, you totally brought me back to memories of seeing those blazers (adorable) and the leather pants they sold (and there were fantastic in that ridiculous kind of way)...I contemplated buying a pair on super-sale, but relented because they were too short. But it was tons of fun trying those on in the dressing rooms.

Thanks for the tip--I'm eyeing the sweaters myself...

This is great - hopefully if it's successful, they'll start selling more of the European collection in stores.

I love the military mini, the 2 zip sweater, merino wool coat, and the sweater dress. They're so much nicer than anything American Gap has....makes you want to move to Europe, doesn't it?

This is exciting. Hopefully they'll start offering their Euro lines more regularly as opposed to the crap that's been threatening to bankrupt them for the past, like, decade.

There's nothing terribly astounding, but then again it still is Gap but there are some nice updated basic pieces.

That's really cool but... I just want the jodhpurs!!!!! Why couldn't they make those part of the collection? :P

p.s. Faran, actually Gap has leather jackets a lot. They had two different styles when I went in today. Just clearing that up. ;)
