Would You Wear

Would You Wear a Clutch?

p11518155_ph_hero.jpg
Designers adore clutches, because they’re a sort of gateway drug to the rest of their brand.

Besides looking cool, they’re smaller and therefore cheaper - so girls who will spend $400 on their favorite logo - but not $1000 - might have some luck.

They’re also good when you’re feeling madcap - why lug something on your shoulder when all you need is your cash, your phone, and your date?

But therein lies the problem -

Clutches are an evening thing, when you’re probably dancing, probably drinking, and probably way more inclined to leave things in cars, cabs, or boys’ apartments.

Do you really risk your wallet and your iPhone just so you can look carefree?

i was big fan of clutches until i had mine grabbed right out of my hands in an old-school purse-snatching. two weeks ago. beware. (and pocketbooks with long straps are back for fall, dontcha know!)

I love the look, but I am very prone to drunkenly forgetting things and, somewhat more embarassingly, having things fly out of my hands as I tipsily gesticulate. And now pursesnatching? No clutch for me.

Last New Years I dropped my clutch on the floor of a crowded bar. It broke open and everything went flying. I never recovered the cash.

I still like clutches but definitely prefer to have a wristlet.

I adore clutches for day, but I live in Dallas and that makes it slightly less impractical. I am in love with that Marc clutch above, but it's like $1500.......a little steep for a clutch!

Clutches are great. You can shove them in a big bag and if you're going out leave the big one in the car and go with the little clutch!
I'd rather risk my (nonexistant) iPhone than my digital camera/cashmere sweater/what ever else is in my bag.

yeah i have to vote no on the clutch thing. I dropped mine on new years in a crowded club and it got trampled and broken. not to mention i hate having to worry about carrying it. I think that they should stop being in style so i can stop being tempted to forget how impractical they are

I love clutches. Sometimes a purse hanging on your shoulder or arm will ruin your outfit. I have never dropped mine or left it behind.

i used to be a wristlet girl because of the ever so convenient strap...because the thing i hate about clutches is how you have to CLUTCH them.

but now, i would perform several unspeakable acts for the prada bow clutch! you have to clutch it, i suppose, but the handhole facillitates it nicely. and i love anything in a kelly/forest green! anyone know the pricing on these so i can start saving?

I've never dropped mine or left it, either. It's...my purse. I'm not going to forget it, like a pair of gloves. (Knock on wood). I just tuck my under my arm and go about my business. I love them. You can also get fabulous vintage ones for cheap, still.

I prefer wristlets, because I want something that will keep the purse attached to me. I had a bad clutch experience three weeks after I moved to NYC from D.C. a while back. I was carrying a brand new Coach clutch, without a handle, under my arm.

A guy who I now realize had followed stupid me from the subway came running up behind me, pushed me aside, grabbed the clutch, and ran into Prospect Park. Everything gone. When I told people afterward that I'd been mugged, they said, "Welcome to NY." That was the end of me and clutches.

"They're also good when you're feeling madcap" HAHA, that's hilarious. Yeah, I have to say, I often see adorable clutches, but then I'm like, "how often am I really going to use this?" as I drift of to the more substantial purses.

I like wristlets for going out...as long as I don't accidentally unzip them! Clutches are good for events and the oversized ones are great if you're working the event and need to carry a lot of stuff around in something elegant.

Clutches are made for girls in driving towns and events with no promise of an after-party. In New York, a clutch is just a snatchable, droppable thing that you will have to remember from venue to venue, subway to subway, and in addition, you will have to carry that bottle of water you acquired between venues.

another vote for wristlets!
plus, with most well-designed wristlets, you can always tuck the wrist strap inside the pouch if you REALLY need a true clutch.
that said, my favorite all-time party bag is a vintage gold glitter clutch that is barely big enough to hold my keys, cards, and lipgloss, but it's so SPARKLY!

personally i go with this fab clutch that has a cuff bracelet attached. or a real purse. clutches are good for events (like charity balls or whatever) but for parties they are not that awesome.

however there was one night i went sans bag by putting cash in my bra and wearing a garter to hold my cell. sounds trashy but it wasnt. in fact it was amazing.

i like baags that have aa strap that you can put inside the bag and make into a clutch
if you get bored of carrying it you can put it on your armand vice versa!

Giant clutches are the way to go, you can just put them under your arm and go. I have one I use for day and night, vintage, and I love it! Teeny clutches are too precious.
