Would You Wear

Would You Wear Jodhpurs?

Sundays Will Never Be the Same
Odd words from Hilary Alexander, the madly fun and shard-sharp editor of the London Telegraph:

“Jodhpur mania has set in,”
to the point of wait lists at Harrod’s and Browns.

Jodhpurs are those crazy little pants that taper at the knee and then poof. They’re a staple of the equestrian uniform, but Hilary’s seeing them on the streets, not the stables.

Balenciaga had an odd khaki pair on their Fall ‘07 runway; now Hilary says they’re at Miss Sixty and The Gap.

And though some British trends never fully catch light in America (maxi dresses, pageboy caps, The Klaxons), we’re still a little curious, and even a little alarmed:

Would you wear jodhpurs out of the barn?

I have a gut feeling those Balenciaga pants actually look pretty good.

on a real girl outside of the stables, i'd have to say michelle from kingdom of style looks pretty good in them... http://kingdomofstyle.typepad.co.uk/my_weblog/2007/08/dont-look-at-th.html

You would have to have pretty slim legs to wear them, but otherwise, i like them. I also like the klaxons!

If there were some male version of the balenciaga's i would wear them paired with a striped shirt and some white shoes.

I grew up around horses. I find equestrian trends outside of the barn extremely jarring whether it be legitimate equestrian gear (like my mother wearing her britches to the grocery store) or fashion items made to look equestrian. I would never buy it just because it's too much, like two worlds colliding. And the only riders I know who still wear jodhpurs on a regular basis are the older European gentlemen who used to be in the calvary.

LOL. Everything from the 80s is coming back! I wore them when I was 14. We would also sew in the side seam of our (1 size larger) jeans up to the knee to get the look for less.

Yes, but only in dark colors and knee high boots.

I'm going to dissent and say HELL NO. Poofy from the knee up = unwanted thigh bulk.
If I want to draw attention to my legs, I'll do it in a minidress (and tights for fall), not jodhpurs.

Yes, totally. Although I much prefer breeches with lambskin patches over the jodhpurs.

White breeches, black field boots, tom thumb spurs w/silver accents on the straps, long , flowy coat, maybe a bright tunic top.

Sorta like Gaulthier's couture outfit this summer.

I'd wear them or rather I am. But the most important thing is please don't wear your knee high boots and flowy coats. This isn't satire fashion a la Jeremy Scott.
