Your Wardrobe Says, Keep Me!

Our “favorite” parts of magazines are the “Buy or Toss” section.

You know the one - a chart or list, where the magazine decrees army blazers “in” (so Balenciaga right now), or army blazers “out” (so Victor and Rolf from 2 years ago).

But any fashion maven will tell you it’s the mash of current and past seasons that makes style interesting.

So why the constant spreads telling us what to “buy or toss” for the upcoming season?

Loads of items on September’s British Vogue “Keep or Delete?” page have woven in and out of fashion for decades, never truly losing steam. They don’t like leggings - we’ve seen them on half the runways. They don’t like ballet flats - we’ll never surrender our Repettos. And they don’t like skinny jeans, which are great layering pieces for fall.

Should magazines urge you to toss these fashion fixtures? Or should they focus on highlighting trends that actually are seasonal, not timeless. We understand why magazines want us to put aside our summer neon and white shoes / skirts / pants - those only work on vacation.

But can you really edit your closet based on someone else’s list?

If anyone followed their" Keep or Delete?" list there's a chance you'll have nothing left in your wardrobe or less the person's really rich, I totally agree that the past and present season items are very important in one's style.

I'm getting too old for these lists.

I'm wearing what I want, when I want.

i second R. Hawkins. besides seasonal also depends on geographical. where i am i can wear cashmere sweaters all year long! on a hot day i leave it in the car on a cold day like 65 degrees (that's cold for us in CA) i throw it on.

I laughed heartily when I read this page. The idea of telling billions of women throwing away their ballerinas seemed foolish to me. And I too will hold tight to my beloved Repettos.

in one issue of harper's bazaar they said to get rid of chain handled bags. then a couple pages later they featured a chain handled bag. WHAT?

Just when it was about to get cold enough to justify the urban turban as winterwear! Eugh.
Also, neon colours won't die until the Klaxons say so. And the day I see ravers in off-colours is the day I finally get a ride on that unicorn.

ugh i hate those stupid lists because a part of me wants to go to my closet and get rid of everything thats supposedly "out" but another part of my knows that those pieces that aren't so hot right now will come around again. and if they don't, who cares? if i like them and feel good wearing them, then thats all that should matter.

I've taken issue with being told what I should and should not wear lately, as well. If I want to wear my skinny jeans (or bootcut/flare -- gasp!) I'm going to do so with a smile upon my face...

R. Hawkins for president! But who cares about what age you are - fashion's greatest muses are a huge range of ages...who can forget young Kate Moss in her vintage Westwood pirate boots, LBD & army coat? I would still wear that same outfit in a second!!

I like these for a quick feel of what's on it's way in and what might not stick around for long, and they may influence some purchases I make, but I certainly don't live by them 100%. It's nice to hear others' opinions, but I'll make my own choices.

I agree with not following trends. I say incorporate them into your own personal style. The only rules I ALWAYS follow are
1. do not wear brown and black together
2. do not mix silver and gold
3. and never ever denim and denim

I like the lists. But that doesn't mean I listen to them.

fashion is a revolving door. What was out 5 years ago will be back in within a few years, so what's the fuss. I suggest keeping your style classic and incoporate a few trendy pieces. This way you will always look stylish without breaking the bank.
