Anna Wintour and Rachel Zoe: Compare and Contrast

fg060914_wintourzoe569.jpeg
The Sunday Times piece on Rachel Zoe has already gotten loads of attention from reporters - probably because in it, Rachel claims she’s “more influential” than Anna Wintour.

We thought it was more interesting that writer Lynn Hirschberg wrote, point blank, that Harvey Weinstein asked girls in his movies to wear Marchesa.

Anyway, some may see Rachel Zoe as arrogant or delusional, while others note in most ways, she’s absolutely right.

But what hasn’t been mentioned yet is that this Sunday, in another magazine supplement, Anna Wintour talks back.

In yesterday’s Telegraph Fashion Supplement, the Vogue editor writes about the unique job of a stylist, and notes, “Although I was for years a fashion sittings editor, I was never particularly good at it. Which is not to say that I was untalented, but that I was always conscious that there existed, high in the stratosphere, stylists whose gifts I simply did not have… you cannot be taught how to be a great fashion editor. Either you’ve got it or you haven’t.”

Whether Anna thinks that Rachel has “it” isn’t stated in the piece, but let’s remember, she did commission Marina Rust to do a three page feature on the stylist last year.

Also worth nothing from the Telegraph’s Anna essay:

“One thing that strikes me is the degree to which the fashion editor’s visual perspective is governed by his or her earliest years… so although fashion is completely implicated in the transitory - clothes are here today, gone tomorrow… in a great stylist is a deep pool of memory and longing. It’s down there that the extraordinary images swim from.”

Amazing and sad, if true.

rachel talks a lot about her ambitions with educating people about the history of fashion, whatnot, etc., but at the end of the day she's still only known for popularizing trends that go away as quickly as they come. and honestly, 50 years from now, anna wintour will be remembered for her influence and rachel zoe will be remembered for her suntan.

"Basically, I don’t like any of the colors that don’t look good on me. Zoe laughed. “I never truly decide about a dress for a big awards show until five minutes before they have to leave. It’s always Cinderella off to the ball.

She is nauseating. All her girls look the same, it's boring. And all this 'fame' has gone to her head. Someone tell her to stop speaking in the third person!

The thing I noticed about the article was how it kept mentioning how she wanted veggies, no sauce, and she even sent it back when they put sauce on it. *cough* anorexic *cough*. The writer never made commentary, she just described this, which I found quite telling about Rachel Zoe. And both have a lot of fashion influence, just to different people.

how about the fact that she refers to sunglasses as "sunnies"? the lack of calories in her mouth is also cutting off oxy. to her brain...

i remember seeing her in nyc a couple of years before she moved to la, and when she was still "rachel zoe rosenzweig."
she was not so thin in the face.......i don't think her weight is natural in any way......people need meat on their bones to fill in the wrinkles.

Nicole Ritchie is repeatedly spoken of rather derisively in this article. While I agree that the entire concept of her celebrity is baffling, I must say that of all Zoe's girls, she really owned her look. She always looked lovely and confident on the red carpet, wheras some of Zoe's other girls, such as Lindsay and Mischa, always look like little girls playing dress up. The Chanel dress might be beautiful, but it requires a certain something special to wear it effortlessly. A stylist can only take you so far.

I had trouble finding the Anna Wintour article in the Telegraph, but even from the excerpts you mention her intelligence and graciousness (wow) are striking.

They are both RELICS. They dress like cavewomen. Isn't it 2008? Aren't we all aware by now of the hideous cruelty involved in stripping animals of their fur? Must we re-live our species' brutal and survivalist past with these so called "fashions?"

Fashion ought to be forward-thinking. Fresh. Eco-friendly. Alive. Everything Anna, Rachel and their dead animal pelts are NOT.
