H&M and Chloe: It Never Ends

First, H&M copies Phoebe Philo’s billowy bib dresses, which we’ve all still got in our closets (I’ll admit it; now it’s your turn).
Next, H&M steals Anya and Freja from the Chloe campaign and adopts them as their own poster girls.
And this weekend, they went one step further, rolling out their upscale line COS for London and European girls – especially London girls who stalk Ms. Philo in her Notting Hill neighborhood.
The collection was very clean and easy to understand – but it was almost entirely cream, black, and a neon shade of burnt orange that we’ve only seen once before: On the last Chloe catwalk.
The shapes of the dresses were also similar – short, boxed, skimmed – and all of the girls had long, shiny straight hair, parted to one side, with orange lip gloss.
Just like these girls from… yes, the last Chloe show.
So H&M, we have to ask:
Is Chloe like the senior girl in high school that inspired your freshman crush? Because this big sister/ little sister clothes snatch just won’t stop…

I beg to differ; I found the Topshop show remarkable refreshing in a season that seemed to team with labels trying to create a hodgepodge of Prada+Marc Jacobs+LV trends. Although they may have taken some tips from Phoebe’s Chloe show, don’t you think that perhaps it was kind of the point? For me, I’ve missed Philo’s (and Stella’s) influence, and the past Chloe seasons just don’t compare. Although I agree that this may not be a new direction, I still feel that Topshop should be commended for their expertise in taking in trends and at times inventing something new (rather than copying them).

Hi Karen,
1. I love TopShop more than I love most people and definitely most puppies and kittens, but they DID rip off a Chloe jumper to the point of a legitimate lawsuit. So sure, it’s TopShop’s job to reference the runway, but we have to watch out and make sure something new (besides cheap fabric) is infused with the clothes.
2. This post isn’t about TopShop at all, it’s about COS, which is the high end line from H&M. Did I mess up with the title and call it TopShop? Someone let me know…

faran, i think you’re an awesome writer and i love your blog, but sometimes your responses to readers are so needlessly sarcastic.

All’s fair in love and cheap attire. Topshop didn’t “steal” those models. It’s all about $. Those girls could have said no (though not sure how their bookers would react). It’s not like they were forced at gunpoint to model in those dresses.
Further, let’s see who Phoebe stole from for inspiration! It’s not like the designer had an epiphany with those dresses and jumpers. Good morning 1960′s. Hello Rosemary’s Baby’s costume designer.

COS/H&M people! Not TopShop!

or maybe it’s for those who can’t afford chloe?

but. this post is about H&M….right?
