Fashion Week

Please, Marc, Don’t Say It’s Over

marclate.jpgBy now, everyone knows that the Marc show started two hours late—

And that many fashion critics (ahem, Suzy Menkes) are seriously ticked. In fact, Menkes says she would like to “murder [Marc] with her bare hands”— though we think she’d need to be standing on a pair of very high MJ heels to be able to reach his neck.

Marc’s response is that we’re lucky he does a show for us at all, given the the unfortunate combination of a bumped-up show schedule —in part because of the Jewish holidays, and in part because of the show season in Europe— and the closure of Italian factories for the month of August.

Still, there are plenty of other designers in New York using Italian fabrics and they manage to show “on time”—meaning about a half hour after the start time printed on the invitation.

Now Marc is threatening to show in Europe next year and CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg is -in her own words- begging him to stay in NY.

Though Marc already shows Vuitton in Paris, and presented his fall Marc by Marc collection in London, we don’t think he’s really going anywhere. Marc knows he’s got the most important show in New York and he likes it that way.

After all, while a few retailers decamped early, even Ms. Menkes waited for the show.

We think that’s why there’s been so much outrage directed at him;

We’re mad at ourselves, for caring enough, for waiting when it’s clear he’s just making us wait because he’s the only designer in NY anyone would sit on bleachers for two hours to see.

Marc may be like the loser boy who always keeps you waiting for dinner, but he’s too cute to break up with.

I hope Suzy is enjoying her new year's brisket in Europe right now.

I loved Marc, who didn't? But it's starting to seem that marc's ego is getting a little too big for his own good. With his new body and star-status, it seems he's replaced drug addiction with self-obsession. --B

Total empty threats, I don't think he'd ever really move the show overseas. And yeah it sucks, and seems to be getting worse and worse every year, but I feel like as long as he keeps delivering beautiful collections everything will be forgiven. Which really only means there's much pressure on him, because as soon as he screws up everyone's going to be on him like mad.

Well, to the question of who didn't love Marc: quite a few critics. That seems to be what he's really being so pouty about--but then again, he reaps the benefits of having the enfant terrible show of the week, and this outburst is the cherry on top for him. But if you compare his reaction this year to that from the fall 2005 show, it certainly seems like the tanorexia has gone to his head.

Marc may have a problem with time, but Suzy basically disqualified herself as a critic. Poor judgement, disappointing. Maybe her regal time is up - she is too detached in her below serious "worldview". I don't know why no one attacks her views, she's not untouchable. Plus, some people have too much power in fashion - and they are usually not designers.

It will all come back to haunt him. You don't remain in ANY business for long if you have so little respect for other people's time.

Suzy had to stay because that's her JOB. (And it seems she is being criticized for her comments, and she is certainly not untouchable.) Marc's job is to make clothes for a show. He was late. The timing, the factories being closed-- this was not a surprise to him. In my job, if I neglect something like, say, FedEx being closed for whatever reason, if I don't make plans to accommodate that, I'm not doing my job well, no matter how great whatever was supposed to arrive by FedEx is (or would have been, if the intended recipient had gotten it). Sorry, the late thing makes me CRAZY. It is totally a power play.

It is easy to judge someone on a process that you know little about. This is a man who works on many collections, so if he decides to be late, so be it!
Get over yourselves. If you don't like him, don't buy his things.

So what if he needs a break- He just admitted he ran home to shower and shave before the show. Give it a rest. He has so much pressure to perform season after season. And no, I don't know him.
Sheesh.

Sorry Rachel but being late is really uncouth. Marc Jacobs is a great man but everyone's super busy during fashion week (writers, editors, stylists, models, etc.) so it's really not fair to those who have other things on their plate to do. And it throws off the schedule for the rest of the day of other fashion shows. And how do you know that no one else knows about the process? You'd be surprised what some of the commenters on fashionista do. . .

its so funny to me that people actually complain about having to WAIT for marc jacobs. everyone knows fashion isnt ONLY about the clothes--its the egos, the spectacle, the drama... get over it! you love it.

If only the show had been worth the two hour wait.

"It is easy to judge someone on a process that you know little about. This is a man who works on many collections, so if he decides to be late, so be it!"

Please. He has multiple teams working each division/collection; he's late because it'll cause a buzz and add more chatter to an already loved/loathed collection.

Usually I luff Marc with two f's but this year I did not. The show was messy and half baked and so were the clothes. He's got to get it together. People will not put up with it forever. There is always some new hot up and comer ready to take your place.

Suzy Menkes should be ashamed of herself for saying sush nasty things about Marc publicly.
It's a fashion show for crying out loud.
It's not like anyone had to dig ditches for 2 hours while they waited.
Marc always puts on stellar shows and I for one would be all too happy to sit a room full of fabulous people for two hours to see it. So long as I don't have to sit next to Suzy.

gerald, i used to work for a major designer who shows at bryant park. i directed this to people who haven't had first hand experience with all night show prep for two weeks up to the presentation. there comes a point when you are so tired taking time to yourself is the only thing that matter, and if he wanted to run late, it happens. there are more important things to worry about. besides, this wait is common with marc jacobs. everyone knows this about him. if you got to have a ticket, i am sure you would have jumped at the chance.

Late, schmate. Everyone will be back again next season because that's the way it works. He's got the goods magazines need to fill their pages. We are co-dependent. Why argue?

Marc should be ashamed. I think his excuses insult all the other designers who get their work done on time. At least this time the Armory was at a comfortable temperature. In the past it's been so hot people were on the verge of fainting, and another time so cold that I was wearing a coat, hat and gloves INSIDE and was still shaking while we waited for the clothes to finally make an appearance. What happened to "the customer is always right" and caring about the people who support you? He clearly has no respect for the people who are the reason he's in business. Ego, ego, ego.

Marc Jacobs is so over. Why can't anyone see that? He's so 2003. Dude it's all about Philip Lim...did you not see the Anna Sui show this year? It was awsome! P.S. Daisy smells like desperation...and obligation...
